China is a great country for bridges. There are the famous wind-and-rain bridges of the minorities in Guizhou, but if you’re willing to travel off the beaten track, another real treat is the covered bridges of Taishun county in the deep south of Zhejiang.
This bridge is called Wenxing bridge, near the village of Xiaocun, says my map. But I’m not really sure about that, as ‘xiao cun’ just means ‘little village’…and, well, it was not far away from a little village, but then again...
Being built in 1957, Wenxing bridge actually is one of the most recent covered bridges of the area. It’s in the middle of rice fields, there’s a little house at the foot of the bridge, on the other side, not visible in this picture.
---
By the way…the comfy direct bus from Taishun took us back to Shanghai in only 9 hours or so. ('scuse me if I got the number wrong, I wasn't counting...) Anyway, this is now possible thanks to shiny new Hangzhou Bay Bridge, a real technological superfeat, the longest bridge in the world even, and time-saving o yes...but it didn't half steal my heart like Wenxing bridge did.
---
With a BIG smiley from Antwerp, as we've just said NO to 'our own'(?) mega bridge project in a public referendum, leaving some local politicians and their building contractors in backrooms trying to figure out whether our no might not actually be interpreted as some kind of yes in disguise.

HI Benny,
It is a very unique looking bridge. I thought it was more like a temple or a very well decorated house when I first saw it. very beautiful and exotic location, surrounded by natural setting of rural farming villages and misty mountain side. Excelletn shot even in this low light, there is great details and colors. Thanks

Great bridge, look at those worn steps, how many thousands of people must have passed under that shingle roof.
Good POV and great subject. TFS

Dag Benny,
Een mooi tafereel met de brug in zachte rode kleuren geplaatst achter het felle groen van het rijstveld. Mooi.
Groetjes,

Hello Benny,
I can see why you love this bridge. The architecture is beautiful, and I would not have guessed that it was only built 50 years ago; it looks much older. I like the stone steps and pagoda roof, and the way you present the bridge with the lovely green foreground.

This photo shows the age of the bridge while also making it clearly a Chinese image. The rice fields in the foreground and the hills behind are so typical of rural China. I think you have done a good job with composition for this shot.

Hi Benny,

Hello Benny,
Of course the covered bridge isn't a North American phenomenon only, I guess the Chinese invented them 2000 years before!
And what a stunning design, with the typical roof construction leaving no doubt where this is...
A balanced composition with good details, the low light creates a special mood!
