Photographer’s Note
In the background La Gross Horloge, in the foreground a statue of the French Admiral and Government Minister, Guy-Victor Duperré.
In the 13th century the bottom part of this great gateway marked the entrance to the town of La Rochelle from the port area. It originally had two archways, one for pedestrians and one for carriages. The two arches were made into one in 1672 to improve traffic circulation. In 1746, the upper part of the previous tower was demolished and replaced by the building you can see today.
Guy-Victor Duperré (La Rochelle, 20 February 1775–Paris, 2 November 1846) was a French admiral, Pair de France and thrice Naval Minister.
Duperré commanded the fleet at the Battle of Grand Port, where he was wounded. From 1812 to 1814, he commanded the French and Italian naval forces. On February 5, 1830, Charles X named him commander of the naval elements of the expeditionary force that carried out the Invasion of Algiers in 1830.
The picture is a stitch of two landscape images. Sorry for the traffic, but it's a busy street and difficult to avoid!

Hi Stephen,
Not easy, stitching with moving traffic. Quite a good job. Nice streetscape of La Rochelle, a town that I discovered in June this year. I see that you choose a special day to take this shot :-).
Have a nice day

Bonjour Stephen
Pas facile à faire ce cliché avec le rond-point et toutes les voitures qui circulent dans le secteur mais tu t'en sors plutôt bien, c'est clair, lumineux et intéressant.
Bonne journée.

Hi Stephen, I must say that the French and Italians really do know how to do a good gate. I suppose they've had centuries of practice. Nice POV here, with that brilliant French-blue sky and light-coloured architecture. TFS and have a happy Thursday, Lisa

Stephen,
This is a nicely composed shot with the statue providing balance for the tower. The road leads the eye to the gate perfectly giving the photo a good sense of direction. The lighting and colors are fine as is the photo's sharpness.

Bonjour Stephen,
C'est une image de la Rochelle, comme si on y était. La lumière y est agréable et le trafic est "naturel".
Excellent équilibre de la composition et bonne réalisation.
Bonne journée

Hi Stephen,
A fine and interesting street scene! This looks very typical French and the man of this statue is apparently a contemporary of that Frenchman, who became king of Sweden, they could very well have known each other...
Kind regards

Bonsoir, cher Stephen,

Hi Stephen. A very beautiful photograph of this central place in Rochelle. In combination with the blue sky, the photo looks particularly good. Regards, Wolfgang. Have a nice weekend.

Undoubtedly the sky is very interesting & with nice colors but I think it's really grabbing more attention than the subject. The subject with less brightness may add a more balanced feel in the image complimenting the sky!

Hi Stephen.
I didn't have to click on the thumbnail to know this was La Rochelle; I remember well the clock tower and its arch, and the statue. The sky is stunning in this one, and the square crop very pleasingly places the statue and the clock/weather-vane on a diagonal. Beautiful light and colour, excellent clarity and detail on the buildings. Great stitching job, and never mind the traffic. There can't be many opportunities in LR to take this shot without it!
Regards,
Andrew
