Photographer’s Note

I thought it could be worth while to show you another sight of San Peter’s church in Portovenere, where you can better appreciate its peculiar position at the entrance of the narrow channel which separates the continent from the island of Palmaria, a small part of which is visible at the left. I shot this photo from the boat which brings the tourists in a tour of the islands of the Golfo dei Poeti (Poets Gulf), a tour which I recommend to anyone who loves the seascapes. At the right of the church you can see the Doria Castle built in 1113.

Vi propongo un’altra veduta della Chiesa di San Pietro di Portovenere, dove si può apprezzare meglio la sua posizione all’imbocco del canale tra la terraferma e l’isola Palmaria di cui è visibile una lingua di terra a sinistra. Ho preso questa foto a bordo del battello che fa il giro delle isole del Golfo dei poeti, un giro che raccomando a tutti coloro che amano i paesaggi marini. Alla destra della chiesa si erge il Castello Doria costruito dai genovesi nel 1113.

Portovenere (Portivene in lingua ligure) è un comune di 4.045 abitanti della provincia della Spezia.
Il paese sorge all’estremità meridionale di una penisola, la quale, staccandosi dalla frastagliata linea di costa della riviera ligure di levante, va a formare la sponda occidentale del Golfo della Spezia. Alla fine di questa penisola si formano tre piccole isole: la Palmaria, Tino e il Tinetto; solo l'isola Palmaria, che sorge proprio di fronte al borgo di Portovenere al di là di uno stretto braccio di mare, è in piccola parte abitata.Alla città è stata conferita nel 2006 la Bandiera Blu per la qualità dei servizi del porto turistico (Marina di Portovenere).

Thanks for showing another photo from this impressive church. In this really well composed photo one can better see its interesting location and proportions (of course in the Ws of the previous upload as well). The surrounding walls emphasize the impression of a fortress. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought this is sepia, but interestingly it is a colour variant! Certainly a place to visit. Thanks for the good note too.

It seems to be quite an impressive historic place. Excellent general view from a distance showing the two monuments side by side over the infinite sea. The church being more elegant and pretty and the castle a bit more inaccessible perched on the rocks. I suppose the day was a bit greyish but you did a good job.

Ciao caro Donato, son stato a Portovenere in moto qualche anno fa, ma così bella e suggestiva proprio non la ricordavo. La virata in seppia toglie all'immagine la sensazione della cartolina e gli conferisce un tocco artistico veramente piacevole. Ottima realizzazione, sotto tutti i punti di vista.

Ciao Donato,non e' facile scegliere perche' hai lavorato molto bene,ma devo dire che la scelta migliore l'hai fatta tu postando questo sepia light come immagine principale.Non commento la qualita' dell'inquadratura,nitidezza etc perche' non ce n'e' bisogno,tutto ok.Buona Domenica! Luciano

a nice Sepia format with the castle and the church in a fine coexistence at the end of the rock.I like the clarity and the sharpness of the scene, as the little narrow entrance that lead to Poets golf.Informative your note as well.

Hi Donato,

I really enjoy the colours of this picture and the wonderful mood. I have seen in other pictures that this place is not very colourful even in sunshine. Here the cloudy but bright day creates a very special atmosphere. Excellent photo-job! TFS and have nice Sunday evening!

Vista nella galleria mi sembrava un posto non Italiano, qualcosa tipo Mont Saint Michel, invece.....! Merito anche della tua bella inquadratura! Purtroppo non conosco il posto, e leggendo la tua nota mi vien sempre più voglia di andarci, sono anni che me lo dico!! Ho visto il WS, mi piace di più questa versione leggermente seppiata, dà più fascino e accentua di più l'antica storia del luogo!

Ciao Donato.
Per la giornataccia che era hai fatto veramente tanto.
Forse una foto monocroma avrebbe meglio minimizzato il cielo lattiginoso.
Non mi piace in tutta sincerità il pescatore che offre le terga all'obiettivo, ma la composizione è comunque ottima, compresi i galleggianti che creano un proprio ed aggiuntivo piano prospettico.

Ciao Donato. Non so cosa hai combinatop in PP ma ti assicuro che il risultato è indubbiamente efficace. Sharp e contrasto eccellenti per una composzione davvero buona.

Ciao Donato.
Da questo POV ampio apprezzo maggiormente questa chiesa rispetto al tuo post precedente, poi c'è profondità e un 3 piani distinti. Bel complesso comunque, non l'ho mai visto, bisogna che metta in programma la Liguria in un prossimo futuro. Rispetto alle versioni del WS quella che preferisco è la versione in b/n, sembra una vecchia cartolina e l'immagine si presta molto. Questa versione e quella a colori hanno un cielo troppo compatto secondo me, in questa sono di diturbo quei pallini di colore rosso e blu vicino al pescatore,avrei desaturato lì.
Ti ho messo un WS anch'io, fatti 4 risate...

Je ne vais pas développer mes impressions sur cette photo-ci car tu les connais déjà. Ceci dit, j'aime bien la composition et le PDV.
Je trouve très intéressantes toutes ces photos proposées dans le WS. Elles montrent à quel point un lieu peut être perçu différemment selon les conditions climatiques qu'on y rencontre. Vraiment très intéressant. Comme je te l'ai dit, l'image que je conserve de Porto Venere est celle d'un port très coloré et très animé, par conséquent pour moi la photo la plus représentative de ce lieu est la version 1 du WS. Le top aurait été la version 1 avec un ciel plus habité, avec le ciel de la photo de Fellini par exemple.
Pour la photo de Porto Venere il y a 200 ans, j'aime beaucoup l'idée. Je trouve ça amusant.
Un post original par la variété des photos proposées !

excellent POV on this interesting place! A very well composed impression with all these tiny tourists that obviously will invade Portovenere. But the light is strange and therefore I prefer the B&W version, this one however is also fascinating.

mi ha molto incuriosito la sequenza di workshop, anche perche' la conversione in BeN ha trasformato un difetto dell'originale (cielo e mare un po' slavati e confusi tra loro) in un notevole pregio del risultato finale. Non posso esimermi dal proporti anche una mia versione "anticata", molto classica e senza aggiunte di grana/rumore.
Grazie, le tue pubblicazioni sono sempre stuzzicanti dal punto di vista dell'interpretazione fotografica e della tecnica di elaborazione.

I think the composition works very well, I might want to crop a little from the bottom, but that's a minor point. but I do like the sepia effect, somehow it brings the photo together, the colours might be a little distracting in this case. cannot really define it, but there's something very appealing in this image :) like an old postcard, I guess.

A very nnice point of viewof the church standing on top of the rock, with well preserved fortifications. But a rather stange color which seems nevertheless natural.
