Photographer's Note

After the pretty colorful postcard, here is a completely diferent version of this imposing castle. It shows one of its towers fighting the cloudy sky while a person faces the deserted landscape and the distant snow-capped peaks of Sierra Nevada.

Set against the background of the snow-capped peaks of Sierra Nevada, the Calahorra castle is one of the most beautiful sights in the whole of Granada province.

La Calahorra (located about 70km east of Granada and 20 south of Guadix) is best known for its impressive Castle - Palace that was built on an ancient Arab fortress on top of a hill but the village deserves a visit too.

The castle was built in the 16th century around a magnificent Renaissance-style palace, its style being a great challenge at the time as the Mediaeval style of building prevailed in Spain. It was promoted by Don Rodrigo de Mendoza, that brought the plans from Italy.
