Photographer's Note
From the covered market in Coimbra in central Portugal. I took this photo on a journey in 1984 and have scanned it from a Kodachrome slide.

Hi Gert,
I always remember Portugal for the many vendors, in markets and on the streets, there is always a special flavour to life in Portugal, I think this simple image shows that. Fish, the life of the sea is important here, and flowers, I always think of the Revolution of Carnations in Portugal, a good mix.
Regards
Justin

I like your photo a lot, like Portugal in general. Fish are important for portuguese as the sea, as the fresh products like flowers and tradicional food from popular markets, far from snob dishes. Simple things for a quiet and unbeatable way of life. Thanks for sharing, it makes me feel as I was there again. OBRIGADO

Hi Gert. Fish and flowers are kind of opposites. But in a market everything fits together perfectly (in Peru, I once saw fish and chicken side by side on a table). I like markets and the life there very much. We learn much more about people than anywhere else. Overall, well worth seeing (old) photo with great technical quality. Rgds, Wolfgang.

this old woman selling fish reminds so much of one of my grandmothers - she came from the countryside and she used to wear the same black cloth on her head...
her expression here is priceless - a mixture of cunning and friendliness that you managed to capture at the right moment.
I like the burned colours - timeless tones for me.

Hello Gert,
What a wonderful expression that old lady fishmonger has! I don't think anyone would have the courage to meddle with her!
I'm sure that these are fresh fish even although the colours suggest something more like smoked fish.
The picture is well composed and I like the happier looking lady behind on the right with her pots of brightly coloured flowers.
Another excellent result from scanning a Kodachrome slide.
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Gert, I showed squids (no squirrels :)) and it is fish by you. But here the expression of the seller is fantastic. I like also other details, like the big scales in the bg. Great scene. Nice photo from Portugal.

Hi Gert!
These scenes can still be found in Portugal, but Coimbra has nowadays a new market,so this is practically part of the history of the city:)! A very well captured scene, for sure!I like the pose of the old lady behind the fish and the way you included the other one in background, selling carnations! Great work with the scanner once again!

Hello Gert,
Really not the best combination between fish market and flowers alone for the smell.
Both women see the future good.
Composition and presentation are nice for look at.
Very well done, TFS.
A nice Sunday,
John.

Hi Gert,
Nice scanning of this "almost" oldie !
Very good pov and perfect timing. Markets, interesting places all over the world to make such observations.
Here the elderly lady selling the fishes has for shure a quite dirty job than the flower seller behind her !

Hello Gert
Interesting how the fishes looked like petals of flowers in the thumbnail. You really did capture the expression on the fishmonger's face brilliantly...cristna sums it up 'a mixture of cunning'. The colour of the fish looked to me like being marinated in some masala...or could have been the light as well. I tried hard to see the names & the prices of the fishes in the small board but could not properly. An excellent scan result for this fine shot!
Best Regards

Hi Gert,
Aaah, I can smell those fishes. Let me write really quickly and get out of the market. It is always interesting to walk through the local market to see all kind of interesting things and see what grows and what kind of animal do they eat. Just have to cover your nose occasionally. Another timeless classic daily life image. Thanks.

Hi Gert
This is definitel one of your five star photos. The subject, the lady looking away and the overall mood is superb. I wished the lady with the flowers was not there getting some of the attention!
Also perheaps most importantly the POV is excellent.

Hi Gert,
the lady looks the other way, maybe she thinks of her business, maybe some customer annoyed her, who knows.
