Photographer’s Note

The temple dates from AD41-54 and was built during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius. Today this well preserved hall stands in a huge excavation ditch some 10m below street level. Its roof which remarkably is still intact, is on the same level as the foundations of the surrounding houses. The roof is supported by 24 columns. The bright colours of the astomonical ceiling have faded but it is still possible to make out the zodiac register with the symbols that are familiar to us today.
