Photographer’s Note
Taken tonight during a dress rehearsal for a concert tomorrow night.
Tomorrow it is 60 years ago that WWII ended for the Netherlands, and May 4 is the official remeberance day for the people who were killed during that war. May 5 is the official celebrating day of the liberation.
This production is a huge one, three ensembles playing sometimes at the same time, a big choir, orchestra and a soloist, a chamberchoir with two soloists, and a childrens' choir. The rehearsal was for Benjamin Brittens War Requiem, a piece that is not often performed due to the big dimensions and the complicity of the piece.
I guess we are here with some 200 people at least, behind the big orchestra is the chamber orchestra, and even further away is the children's choir, both impossible to see. I tried to sqeeze in as many people as possible in the shot, just as we were squeezed on that stage.
(I counted the names in the booklet: 148 singers (children's choir included), 98 musicians in both orchestras, 3 soloists, 3 conductors.
This is a co production between the Delft University Choir and Orchestra Krashna Musika, and the Rotterdam Toonkunst Choir. The church is the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft.
I thought it was nice that they all wanted to attend my birthday ;-)

Fantastic shot for a day worthy to celebrate, both because of the 60 aniversary of the end of the barbarian times and also because, if I´ve understood well, it´s your birthday...(hehehehehe, mine is next saturday, what a coincidence my dear)... Well, I think with this photo you give and accurate idea about what´s going on there, finally your note give us all the clues. I would like to be there to listen this music for the peace... I hope wars end someday, wideworld. Take care.

Wow, fantastic sjot, Rinie. The high angle and the density of the the people below makes a very interesting and busy composition. I like the black areas at the top. Very good shot.

Knowing that you and my grandmother share the same birthday is special.
All the heads for a great pattern and I thought it was a mosaic of sorts when I looked at the thumbmail. Openning it I was surprised it was a mosaic of people. Great point of view. I found it intresting the differnt stages of balding in some of the man.
Happy Birthday, I'll drink some Port to your health and many happy returns and the end of all wars.

I know your camera was on a tripod and you had a remote control in your hand because I can see YOU there in the middle preparing your voice. This is a very nice atmosphere Rinie. A superb point of view.

Hi Rinie!
It´s not easy to get so many people into a good compo,-but you did a perfect job here!
I like the light mood here and the color spots from the people´s clothing.

Great photo of the rehearsal, Rinie. The angle you chose was ideal to fit all those interesting and colorful details into the frame. The concert hall atmosphere is beautifully rendered and bumping up the ISO to 1600 was an obvious choice here that worked out wonderfully. Wish I could attend the concert.
Oh, and happy birthday to you - greetings from aries to taurus :-)

Hi Rinie,
Happy Birthday. Wow, you have a birthday party with 200+ guests? I cannot hear they sing, so I take this as singing “Happy Birthday” scene.
A nice indoor shot with the complexity of the lighting conditions. You have done a good job to show a clear picture to the orchestra. Good DOF and nice contrast.

Nice framing, good the way the concentric circles lead to a focus point top slightly right.

Didn't notice that picture before, well done Rinie, I just think I was too busy with your sailing work.
You succeeded in concentrating a maximum of sangers here, it makes us wishing we could hear that at the same time! Great atmosphere, it makes me think of a mosaïc...
* So your birthday was on May 3rd? Just between my mother on the 1st of May and my father today - 76 & 84 years-old! Must be good... ;o)

Well Rinie, a late arrival at this party, congrats again ;-). I had to rate this one 'cause is so delightfully busy and also 'cause the great diversity of the choir members and instrumentalists are so neatly radially grouped. Very nice PoV and a great definition. Bert.

It looks like you were all very packed in there. It's very good in sharpness and color. And it's a good way to capture the large group, on an angle like this. It adds a bit of dizziness to looking down on them, especially with that chandelier hanging overhead. Sort of like sneaking through the rafters, which is something I like to do on occasion. Hope it all went well and happy belated birthday, as well!
