Photographer’s Note
On May Day 2001, activists in Sydney organised two blockades; one of the stockmarket, the other of the offices of the Australian subsidiary of the Correctional Corporation of America. Australia, with one of the world's highest rates of prisoners held in detention by private corporations, has witnessed growing incarceration rates as the harshness of sentencing laws have increased. Private companies also 'manage' the detention of refugees in Australia. In contrast to all other wealthy countries, Australia detains any person seeking asylum who enters the country without a visa. People often remain in detention for over three years (in some cases more than five) for no other 'crime' than that they are refugees. At the May Day protest police moved in and removed demonstrators from blocking the entrances to the offices of one of the companies running the detention centres.

Welcome to TrekEarth Jasper.
There sure is some strange business going on in Australia.
This is a very expressive photo, with the calm-looking wall of guards and the screaming demonstrator. I wish it was bigger, it's difficult to make out any details here. You're allowed to upload at least twice the size (max 800 pixels).
