Photographer’s Note
Rohtang La
Rohtang means "a pile of dead bodies" in Tibetan and La means "pass". I totally agree that this photo does not do justice to its nomenclature but that is how Rohtang Pass is... totally unpredictable and surprising...
At an height of almost 4000 mts(13000 feet), Rohtang Pass separates the lush green Beas Valley from the barren Chandra Valley. It is one of the two gateways to the Himalayan deserts of Leh-Ladakh and Lahaul-Spiti from Kullu-Manali region. The Pass is closed due to heavy snow for almost 6 months in a year. In summer, when road is cut through snow and the pass is reopened, you travel between many feets high walls of snow on both sides, which is quite an experience.
Rohtang stands true to its notorious name. Just last year in Oct, hundreds of people and vehicles were stranded there for a couple of days due to the sudden deterioration of weather and untimely snowfall.
But the summit of the pass turns into lush green meadow in summer studded with violets and varieties of wild Himalayan and Alpine flowers. You can also see beautiful horses n sheep grazing on the pastures...
That is Rohtang for you...
P.S. : cropped electricity transmission towers.

It was the title that caught my eye but your shot is quite spectacular. The composition and colours are lovely and everything looks ethereally peaceful. Your photo makes me wish I was there and your very complete note tells me all about it - great work.

Beautiful image, Amol.
So placid and relaxing. The colors are not so strong, not exaggerated so the result is a pleasant nature view.
Very well done.

Hello Amol,
this is a nice capture of Rohtang Pass, especially with the two horses ... when I travelled there (in summer 1977 for the first time) I did not see any horses there!
Nice photo, that brings a lot of memories back, thank you!
Greetings

This stunning photo might not do justice to the nomenclature of the place but it sure does justice to its sheer natural beauty. Rohtang is one of my favourite places and seeing this brought back very nice memories. Thanks for sharing this Amol.

Dear Amol,
A very beautiful landscape with live subjects.
Pose of the white and black horses increased the beauty of the picture very much. Well done....

hey amol,
the colors are phenomenal.. love the snow caps in the background, engulfed in mist and clouds.. thank god for the horse in the picture- even though it would have been stunning without them, the thought of being up there all alone is a wee bit scary.. (though i'd love to be there alone;)

Good composition. You caught the two horses at the right combination - brown and white. The weather also helped you.

I don't think it would really be cheating to clone out the transmission tower in the background, and it would add a lot to the photo. Well done, very peaceful nature. TFS!

beats me why they have to put up a electricity transmission tower in middle of such a scenic place ... yes, its necessary ... but could it not have been some other way or much hidden route ?? ... :)
this is a beautiful photo of rohtang pass ... i can see one tower just at the front of the white horse's face ... however, photo was taken, i guess, around mid-day (guessed that from the shadows of the horses) ... thus there is a bit of haze ... i guess using a polarizer filter would have been handy in such situations ...
thanks for sharing ...
