[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
As I passed by the Crown Fountain in Millenium Park in Chicago, this kid just sat like this for a long time. In fact, I was there for at least 10 minutes; he was there before I got there and was there when I left. He had found "the zone"--that time when the mind shuts all out except for the experience at hand.

See some of the notes below from commenters; they have good ideas as to why this boy would do this. I can think to my own life and times when I've abandoned all outside stimuli for just one sensation.

Millenium Park is a wonderful place to explore. The Crown Fountain, here pictured, not only has falling water, but also has huge faces on video behind the water that are quite stunning at night.

Interesting shot David;

It looks like it's pretty heavy water. I couldn't imagine sitting under the pounding water for that long.

You captured a good angle with the digonal line broker by the kid sitting there.
I wonder what the shot would have looked like with a long exposure... hmmmm

Cheers!
- Dan

Hi David

Superb picture, very good shot, with the "artificial rain", the light on the man is very good.
well done

Hi David - what an interesting shot! I like the frozen action of the scene, with the boy surrounded by the crashing water all around. It's a very striking image, with a lot of action. Well done!

Exelente picture, is so drammatic, like your work, I'm seen other pictures from you, wonderful.I was in Univ. of Uthan las year looking a PhD there, nice place, and nice picture I like your work.

good lighting & dof. interesting subject & background especially the water droplets. this is one classic example of "chance shot" where it is always advised to bring along ur camera for u may not know what u will run into.

Beautiful color, I really thought it was raining in Chicago and this is some homeless. It would have probably stay like that for me if not the wonderful note you wrote.

Honestly, I sometimes wish I could do this as well, let it 'rain' on me for ever and feel that sensation. I very much like how you captured the moment with a lot of movement and emotion and great sharpness and details. Although I hope that this lonely soul had some dry clothes to put on and a warm home to return to. Thank you for sharing! Sabine

Bonjour David,
Quelle interessante capture. Ce garçon avait sans doute besoin de rafraichir les idées pour se mettre sous cette cascade.
Superbe composition, le fracas de l'eau est superbement rendu, bon contraste.
Belle photo.
Amicalement
Martine

Very interesting photo David, colours have a kind of pictorical texture that I like. At the same time is very courious the mix of the standing position of the man confronting with the dynnamic mouvement of the water, the combination of both creates in me aand effect of joy of live that get increased by the fact he´s not showing the face, what allows me to feel more like I could be he. Take care.

Great shot and great note. The shot intrigued me and put many questions into my head, your note answered them and developed the story further. A great combination. Makes me think back on the times as a kid when you come across a new experience or sensation and really enjoy it, oblivious to what other people think.

Hi David,
what a curious way to take a shower ! ;-)
A big solitude impression, strange feeling because we don't see his face...
Thank's for sharing this unusual shot.

On se demande bien ce que ce garcon fait ici aussi longtemps !

Le bleu du T-shirt qui sort des couleurs ternes et cette sensation que le garcon est accablé par cette eau qui lui tombe dessus donne un côté très dramatique.

beau cliché !

Hi David. Wow, ten minutes is a long time to be in the fountain in this position, definitely something with "the zone" going on here. Good diagonal frame in which the black pattern of the wall makes a good non-intrusive background to make the main subject stand out well. Also the downpour of water registers ideally versus the dark background.

Excellente photo...
Impressionant cette eau qui frappe le sol!!
Belle composition!
Bravo
Very nice shot

Very nice picture!
I like his blue wet teeshirt and how he protects his head with his hands.
Do you think he was laughing or crying?

I opened your photo, closed it, opened it again and kept coming back to check it every once in a while - I was definitely drawn to something in it. Maybe it's loneliness, abandonment, his retreat from the rest of the world - I don't know but I've been staring at your photo pretty much most of the day! Without your note it probably wouldn't have the same effect but I was wondering what kept that boy under such a strong downpour of water that looked like hail around his feet for such a long time. He used the hands to protect his head so I suppose he wasn't enjoying it but there he was anyway.
As for the picture, maybe I'd crop it on the right side to where the fountain ends but it's irrelevant - the strength of your photo is not in its technical aspects.

Great moment David!
A good way to take shower.
And he sat so beautifully to be a big shot for you.
Good compo.
Well framed.

Hai David, a very nice capture of this scene. I was wondering why the boy is sitting there for sometime ?

It is in fact strange that he stads in there fir such a long time. He could be just refreshing himself but if it was so he would't have covered his face.
Anyway, the photo is very good, with a nice composition and that sense of movement in the water.
Very well done!
Greatings, Artur.

Hi David,
Whatever happened in the mind of the boy,
it was a special moment for shure and you put it into a great composition.I like the strong diagonal and the magic lightmood.
greetings,
hermann

Hi David,
It's a really great picture you propose here !
You captured well this experience of feeling without thinking...
Congratulations,
Christophe

It makes me feel sad. In my head I see it was taken in August and probably it was baking hot. But it looks cold; the water at his feet looks like snow. He looks afraid and is hiding from someone/thing.
You have captured it with good lighting and I see a reflection in the tiles.
It's certainly got us all thinking

Hi David,
Very nice shot. Good composition and POV. Great colors, light and details. Well done

P.S. Don't worry when he left, he had for sure a refreshed mind ;)

Hi David,
I like this kind of pictures which gives you the opportunity to fantasise about what it shows. You can understand the scene but you wonder why. But this picture is more for the scene is unexpected and the composition is lovely.
Groet Rob

Very interesting observations about "the zone", David, and you've got a good illustration of it here. It's nice how the boy is the only color in the image.

I don't think that as pure photography this one is on a par with most of your others--no special light, special POV, etc., more a well-composed snapshot. But together with the note it's very interesting, and that's what counts on TE! Regards, Ken.

Hi David, I was tempted to go to the Blue Mountains but seeing this is a nice surprise, a very expressive subject speaking to our imagination and your note is a pleasant guideline but most the way you put this on the screen is simply perfect with the diagonal perpspective, well exposed and good speed, an excellent capture.

Hello David,
Sorry for my near four weeks delay in critiques and posts to TE members, but life is life. Interesting capture in a nice angle of view and perspective for composition. A refreshing picture for a hot summer day. The water droplets are very well captured, the position of the boy is a must and the sharpness is splendid.

Very well done and composed.
Congratulations.
Fernando

Hello David,

I like this interesting shot. This shower does not seem to be pleasant, but he does seem to be in the zone as you have mentionned. It always great to find an activity that takes us in the zone.

Very well done light and sharpness in the photo.

Regards, Paul

Hi David. Well, 10 minutes...at least, that's quite long in that position. In a sense, it might be a way of being immersed in an outside reality. Diving deep into thoughts, or simply diving into deep thoughts. Also a way of being separated from the environmental noise.

A good diagonal compo, but I would have placed him almost in the upper right corner, to reinforce the diving into thoughts perception and to increase the importance of the wall. On the other hand, the blue spot in the middle of so much white and grey is quite powerful. A very good and interesting shot.

Hi David,
there's so much noise & energy in this dynamic shot and at the same time it seems like the boy actaully enjoys it squatting still.
Lovely light on him. Very interesting!

This is a very exciting scene. The joys of childhood in it's fullest. Amazing how clear the water drops are. Well done.

Opening your picture today, I exclaimed, Oh, no!

Not because the boy is in the rain. That's his enjoyment. I better leave him alone.
No — because you were able to capture such a photo in terribe condition. I was combat-photographer and our chances for luck or unluck were fifty/fifty while your chance to lose in front of this picture is less, or maybe none.
No — mostly, you peeled off my youth when I must expose myself under tropical monsoon to sell produce grown by my parent, or during my school-years when I often hid myself under a business front-door to protect my notebooks from getting wet because I haven't been able to afford a raincoat...

Your photo is a mirror for me to look back my past and review the recent actions or sins...

Thanks for letting me have a good day.

Regards,

Thanh

Your note is excellent . It puts everything into perspective . The color , designed in the background , and water is incredible.jim

Hello David,

i am really impressed by this shot,, i wish i had some more space as a favourite for this..
its a special capture.. there are some pictures which hit you not esthetically or technically but emotionally,.. i dont mean that this picture doesnt deserve any of these first two (it does too!), but (imho) suits to last category more i think.. it really evokes somethings in me, like purification, cleansing, depressing yet realizing.. its a mixture of all these.. strangely enough it gives me a some kind of meditational serenity too...
Quite a rare moment, a very special picture on TE..thanks for that..
best wishes. (sorry for green, later)

Hi, indeed that moment makes everybody curius,
in my opinion it could be drugs the reason why he stands there but none can be sure of what really made this young man do something like that.
Many times i get wet to the bone at wintertime (as i am a farmer). The fist minutes i find somethin funny in beeing wet, but no more than 10 minutes later i always relize that it is no fun at all.

Hello David
I am also wondering about what is going on?
Is he cooling from the heat? Not so sure someones will stay there 10+ minutes without moving.
I kind of think about someone withdrawing from its reality, trying to escape something unpleasant or unsetting.
You make me stop and thinking
Lots of questions
Because of that, this is a really good photography.

David,
A very emotional shot. I love the intensity of the water and the boy's reaction. Just wanting to hide from everything and let the water wash all his problems away.
Great composition with the angle. Terrific stuff. Going to my favorites i think. Was curious to see how this would look in B&W. Looks ok but i think i prefer the original. Let me know what you think.

Good use of a strong compositional diagonal. The 'frosty' appearance, of the splashing water, is interesting. Excellent capture & pov, with superb sharpness. Good work!

i don't know why he was sitting there, perhaps he was sad and during the porurin he felt relaxed.

What do you think, what do you feel, sitting haunch on a sidewalk, barefooted on a rainy afternoon. Incredible photo! If I put myself in his shoes (metaphorically of course since he is not wearing any) I' d say he is enjoying and feeling the rain. Open hands to feel it in my palm and low, near the ground to hear the water falling. If in nature I could also smell the soil. The t-shirt covering my face so that noone would annoy me. That's my interpretation of the boy's action. A bit optimistic but I think I used to do stn like it when in childhood.

Perfect sharpness and lively colours(boy's skin and t-shirt)!

Hi David
Good catch, good composition, I liked ambiance.Interesting POV.

this picture has an amazing quality. I checked out the black and white version, but i think this one is better---one of the unique things about this particular image is that everyone has a different response to it, everyone perceives a different emotion. In the b&w image, the mood is much more sombre, and the tone is already set. I think it's interesting seeing how different people interpret things; there aren't many images that can allow for such a wide range of emotion and speculation.
