La fuite !!!

Cette photo est dédicacée à mon amie Stefania Gebala (Gebala) dont les splendides photos et portraits m’enchantent quotidiennement et qui montrent bien qu’elle est une véritable artiste – Merci Stefania de tout cœur et continue dans cette voie.

Notre petite jeep découverte était arrêtée à 40 kilomètres de Pama – Burkina Faso – à 200 mètres environ d’un troupeau de 8 éléphants (male, femelles et enfants) et nous les regardions tranquillement. Brutalement, le male, sans doute jaloux, s’est mis en colère et a chargé notre jeep à toute allure. Inutile de dire l’émotion que nous avons vécue en entendant les barrissements et la course de cet animal qui voulait sans doute protéger ses femelles et ses enfants. Dans la panique, il a fallu faire démarrer la jeep, reculer puis s’enfuir rapidement (par précaution, nous étions armés avec des fusils de chasse mais comment arrêter un éléphant qui charge ?) – Bien entendu, je n’ai pu viser et la photo a été prise à bout de bras (merci, Sony).

Our small jeep discovered was stopped at 40 kilometers of Pama – Burkina Faso – at 200 meters approximately of a herd of 8 elephants (male, females and children) and we looked at them quietly. Brutally, the male, undoubtedly jealous, was put in anger and charged our little jeep with an incredible speed. Useless to say the emotion which we lived by hearing the trumpetings and the race of this animal which wanted to undoubtedly protect its females and its children. In panic, it was necessary to make start the jeep, move back then to flee quickly (by safe, we were armed with shotguns but how to stop an elephant which charges to you ?) – Of course, I could not aim and this shot was taken with end of arm (thank you, Sony).

Fantastic Gabi!
What an adventure and marvelous captured! The motion of this huge elefant is just fascinating and it must be a really scaring episode. How did you make it? Eventually, you could start the jeep, right?
What a presence of spirit you must had to take the shot in this ambiance...

Superbe photo dans l'action.Je pense que tu aurais du encore attendre un peu avant de déclencher ton appareil, afin de voir ce docile "petit" animal de plus près...(c'est de l'humour!)

Le problème, c'est qu'il va écraser le criquet et son compagnon!
Le moins qu'on puisse dire c'est qu'il y a du mouvement!
On se croirait dans ce film avec C eastwood, tu sais , le titre c'est "chasseur blanc,coeur noir" qquechose comme ça.
+ dangereux que tes petits Bozos.

Waouh ca c'est de la photo qui bouge, je sens ma chaise soulevee par les vibrations !
Vu les conditions de prise super resultat, j'apprecie l'inclusion d'un deuxieme elephant en fond qui ajoute la profondeur a l'action, j'aime beaucoup !

Wooow! Ca c'est une photo qui déménage! Ton texte est palpitant et l'image est superbe compte tenu des circonstances. Et on dis que je prends des riques en montagne! :o)
J'aime cet éléphant en pleine course avec les nuages de poussière autour de lui et on aperçoit les renforts qui accourent derrière!

et bien dis moi, ils ont l'air moins facile à photographier que ces enfants des bords du fleuve ... heureux que tu t'en sortes sans bobo, et quetu nous ramenes cette belle image ...
Une charge bien photographiée et impressionnante par le dynamisme ...
Une belle reussite .... il aurait fallu attendre encore un peu pour un portrait plus rapproché (:)) ... je plaisante !

je vois que tu as envie de poster (en tout cas depuis 3 photos) un peu autre chose que tes superbes images de vie quotidienne.
Cette image est superbe, quel dynamisme !
Il semble vraiment en colère ce mâle, heureusement que vous étiez dans une jeep !!!

Hé hé, moi aussi j'ai eu des aventures avec les éléphants du Burkina (mais pas dans ce coin-là, dans l'Ouest, à Boromo)! En plus, nous étions à pied... Ca fait très bizarre, jamais couru aussi vite! (en fait la plupart du temps l'éléphant veut juste impressionner - ça marche très bien - et si il voit que tu t'en vas, il s'arrête...). Sacrée présence d'esprit que d'avoir fait une photo dans ces conditions car le coeur bat à 100 à l'heure! Elle est bien en plus ta photo, très évocative!

Si tu as d'autres photos du Burkina je serais vraiment intéressée (il y a très peu de photos de ce pays sur TE).

hello Gaby, I didnt think yesterday that I will recieve so great elephant:) Really beauty work:) I hope that he or she doesnt run away becoz of me;) This escape is great...lol again someone escape becoz of me:)));) I wonder how it will be when I come to Mali and they will see me;) I am sorry Gaby "no more elephants in your area;)" I am really happy becoz it is so beauty photo with great point of view, I love this animal:) When I am in Zoo I am really sad becoz they are not in their natural environmental. Gaby, this is right from a film, so exciting, so heroic, so wonderful. I admire how you had the presence of mind to take such a well-balanced shot right in action, with a huge elephant charging at you with full speed! Amazing, really amazing...
I posted yesterday a shot which I took just before a huge (chained) watchdog appeared seemingly out of nowhere, charging at me... I just ran as fast as I could, let alone COMPOSE an image like you did! BIG BRAVO, both for the shot and your heroism!

le résultat est digne des grandes photosanimalières parce que c'st une attitude ou on doit prendre ses jambes à son cou plutot que son appareil photo.

wouah!!! eh bien bravo tu as eu le courage de prendre cette photo alors que je me serais mise sous terre... merci elle est réussie!
sais tu qu'avec Laetitia nous sommes allées dans la forêt où vivent les éléphants, accompagnées bien entendu, et le fusil chargé, mais nous n en avons pas vu à notre grand regret, c 'était indiana jones!! nous parlions tout bas et marchions délicatement, pas très fières, imagine..

On n'est pas au zoo n'est ce pas ! parce que la jeep ne fait pas le poid par rapport à un tel mastondonte, il faut rester prudent. L'éléphant malgré son air débonnaire peut être extrémement dangereux. J'ai eu un pareil tour au Botswana et on n'en menait pas large, je le jure... J'ai fait une photo, mais on ne ressent pas l'impression de charge comme la tienne.
Qu'i doit faire bon vivre en Afrique quand je pense qu'ici il fait 5°C et du brouillard.

Bonjour Gaby,
voilà une photo prise sur le vif, on ne se doute pas du danger que représentent ces animaux qu'on sait pouvoir être si domestiques et amis de l'homme.
On distingue bien le mouvement ici. C'est très réaliste avec la poussière dégagée par le pas de charge.

Love the dynamism in the shot & the straight angle showing the action...
I was scared by elephants in our reserves couple of times, and normally we are cautious about the lonely ones than the ones in a herd..
Also, I can imagine, because the African elephant is a much bigger cousin of the Asian one, which we have here...

Hi Gaby. I have just been checking through what you have posted whilst I have been away, and this one immediately caught my eye. Even though you didn't have time to compose this, it is still perfectly framed and captures the speed of the elephant remarkably well. The dust on the ground and lifted foot accentuates its movement. The raised ears and piercing eyes seem to convey the anger of the animal as well. So glad to hear you got out of there okay. I'm glad you were not on foot (many people don't realise that an elephant, despite its weight, can easily out-run a man). Cheers . . . David

Oui, c'est impressionnant sur la photo et surtout quand ça arrive : on se dit qu'on aurait mieux fait de rester lire le journal chez soi...
Il m'est arrivé à peu près la même chose en Afsud, il y a une trentaine d'année, mais avec un rhino à la place d'un éléphant. J'étais aux premières loges sous le haillon arrière de la Range de mon grand-père, je me disais : mais démarre! nom de dieu, plus vite!!!... et ce c** de rhino qui arrivait à toute allure...

Bonjour Gaby,

Je découvre seulement aujourd'hui votre superbe galerie (je suis inscrite depuis peu sur TE). Et cette image est très forte, on voit toute la force de l'animal lancé ! Elle me rappelle pareille mésaventure au Botswana le mois dernier... Un adulte de 2 tonnes qui a foncé d'un seul coup vers notre voiture. Mais... l'éléphant a stoppé net à 4 m. de notre véhicule. Le guide n'avait pas bougé de toutes façons : les oreilles de l'éléphant n'étant pas rabattues sur l'arrière de sa tête, il avait vu immédiatement qu'il ne s'agissait que d'intimidation... Ils agitent leurs oreilles pour intimider l'ennemi.C'est une info qui peut sauver la vie. ;-)
