Photographer’s Note

‘Dia de Muertos’ celebration (Day of the Dead) in Tzurumataro, a small village in the shores of Lake Patzcuaro in Michoacan, Mexico. Every year, on the night of November 1st, Mexicans in many rural areas visit with those who “made the trip” before them in their new home, the cemetery. Visitors bring to the deceased his/her favorite food and drinks, along with other gifts, including photos of the person remembered and the very unique and indigenous sempasuchil flower (flower of the dead), to assemble a wonderful offering (“ofrenda” in Spanish) in the deceased own tomb. The celebration is possibly one of the better examples of syncretism between Catholicism brought by Spanish conquerors and the indigenous beliefs with a very earthly notion of the afterlife.
