Photographer’s Note

Une des premières chutes de neige à Montréal! Les passants marchent dans les rues en essayant de se protéger comme ils peuvent. Vent, neige, froidure, tout y est pour rendre les gens heureux ou malheureux. Ça dépend. Certains aiment l'hiver, d'autres pas.

Ici, c'est une rue très vivante à Montréal : le boulevard Saint-Laurent, aussi connu sous le nom de "la Main". Vous pouvez trouvez sur cette rue toutes sortes de magasins : nourriture de toutes les cultures, vêtements (à bon marché ou très mode), restaurants (fast-food aussi bien que haute gastronomie), cinémas, librairies, clubs socials culturels, etc. Si vous venez à Montréal, vous devez absolument voir cette rue. C'est une rue historique et renommée.

Ici, il s'agit d'une partie un peu plus calme du boulevard qui vient croiser la rue Rachel. J'étais assise dans un Café, regardant avec plaisir la première neige de l'hiver. J'ai mis en workshop une vue du même endroit afin de vous donner une meilleure idée de la place.

Seems so very creative side. Seem slike one second would really do a good job of creating such a blur. It does look like the weather is really nasty too. Good Work!

A nice experimental shot, Claire. The dosage of blur has just the right amount to give the wanted artistic touch, yet clearly convey the urban evening scene that we are looking at. Good use of repetition with the two pedestrians carrying their black umbrellas. I like it.

I love winters, but if you were to ask me again sometime in March, my answer will be different I think. So far I am really enjoying the first snow fall.
What do I think about this photo ... hmmmm ..
nah .. This photo does not do it for me. Sorry for being honest, but this is a bit too abstract for me. I would have liked to see atleast one thing clear in this photo. I mean if you had a sharp and clear road and motion blur people with light trails, i would have loved it. or clear people with the rest blur. It is very good for abstract painting no doubt.
I hope I am not pressing on your nerves with my honest comments. Pls take my critique positively afterll it is just my opinion about your photo and you do have many people on your side including Norbert

Je vois que tu fais de l'expérimentation photographique avec tes filés ;-)
Et je suis sur que tu devais bien t'amuser à faire ces filés bien au chaud dans le Café, faire des essais, varier les vitesse, attendre les personnes bravant le froid dans la rue, regarder ensuite sur l'écran si celà te plaisait, recommencer et dire de temps en temps "whaouhhhhhhh celle-ci me plait bien"....lol
Je me trompe ou pas? ;-)
j'aime bien l'effet rendu
ces presqu'fantomes qui bravent le vent, la neige, le froid
les lumières en second plan apportent des lignes de couleurs agréables
c'est vrai qu'elle est très picturale ton image

PS la gnole (eau de vie de pomme) de par chez moi s'appelle le calva ou aussi de la goutte (on disait dans la ferme de mes parents près du Mont Saint Michel il y a déja quelque temps: "voulez vous une petite goutte" pour proposer le digestif)

Hi Claire,
now that's something different! You captured very well the busy shopping street in uncomfortable weather, fast walking pedestrians with their bags in the snow, the car in the back adding depth in this image. I like the colours in this shot, caused by the reflections of street lamps on the snow, and also the diagonal lines crossing in the middle.
However, the lines on top of the composition (patatipatata ??) are a bit too disturbing for me, as well as the lights on the right. The concentration of the composition (pedestrians, the car, and the crossing lines) would probably be more effective, as well as a single coloured frame, without them. (I have made a (very little) workshop for you, to show, what I mean, just an idea ... but ... just deleted it again, it was not done very properly). I have a Japanese woodblock-print in mind, which shows a similar scene, people protecting themselves against the snow. Maybe that's the reason why I see a reduced composition in your picture better.
Anyway, it's a very artistic conversion of a simple daily life scene, brilliant, Claire!

Interesting image Claire, very creative. There is enough detail to work out what is going on here. The blurring adds to the sense of a windy day.

Awesome shot Claire..

I can see the exposure of 1 second, but am curious about the movement. The people are moving as is the car - which is expected. But the snow at the peoples feet seems to be blurred as well. Were you panning during the exposure?

i very much like this limited light, as on many of your pictures. great blur effect, especially on people... it's like a dream, when you want to look closer at something and its details are blurring and disappearing... but you feel what you might see.

J'avoue avoir un peu de difficulté avec ta photo.Je comprends que tu as voulu créer une impression de froid avec ce bougé et je dois dire que c'est réussie.Par contre,tout est flou et fantômatique et c'est là que j'éprouve de la dificulté,je n'ai pas de points de repère fixes et çà me donne la tournille.
Que mon commentaire ne t'empêche pas de continuer d'expérimenter car je trouve celà interressant pour moi qui suis en train de me fossiliser,J'espère que ton expérimentation me stimulera dans une direction.
Au plaisir de continuer à te découvrir.

Une vision très spéciale du mauvais temps et surtout très originale.
On dirait une peinture, le seul reproche que je lui trouve serait les feux qui font des trainées à l'arrière et cela gêne un peu cette superbe composition.
A refaire si cela est possible car tout est réuni pour un chef d'oeuvre :)

Fantastic Claire!
Your shot experiences are fascinating. This one resulted in a very dramatic scene, with the right atmosphere of a snow storm. It's almost like an art painting with those abstract lights in the background. Very, very nice! Congratulations for your good work.

p.s. - I would be the unhappy one. I think, I couldn't live in a city with so low temperatures and a lot of rain and snow...

Bonjour Claire, J'étais partager moi aussi au début, je crois également qu'un élément parfaitement au focus aurait donné dynamisme plus fort à la photo. Mais, lorsqu'on la regarde plus longuement, l'effet de flou n'est pas mauvais, il y a un petit côté fantôme que j'aime bien. Enfin, avec un temps d'exposition d'une seconde sans trépied, il serait très difficile d'obtenir cet élément au focus. Continuez votre bon travail.

J'aime bien l'ambianc ede cette image. On sent bien qu'on a pas envoe de rester et que tout le monde est pressé. Le fait que tout soit flou dynamise l'image. J'aurais quand même bien vu un point d'accroche net, un personnage, une voiture...

I've been down this very street, Saint-Laurent Boulevard, but thankfully it was in the summer of 2003 not winter. An unusual and impressive piece here, and one that is clearly artistic. I think you should develop this avenue further, there is real talent here. Nice work.

hi claire, an awesome work - this blurr just leaves the scene in a "suspend" mode: the wonter storm is going round there, so much so that everything is shaking of cold - this is my reading of this image, now;

An umbrella..for the snow. That is such a good idea! I honestly have never seen anyone do that before- most likely because I avoid walking in snow storms as much as possible and absolutely everyone drives where I live.
About this photo- I really enjoy it. The fluid light reflections off the car are just beautiful. The way the snow created lines around the figures' feet gives the photo a painted feel- a cold feel- but like a painting :). Very great creative work Clair!

je découvre cette photo : c'est vraiment très très bien fait, le timing est parfait, il y a même avec la trainée de lumière jaune un espèce de lien virtuel et lumineux entre les deux parapluies.. la voiture est idéalement placée aussi, je suis épaté par comment tout tombe en place, je suis aussi très étonné par la vitesse : 1 seconde, ils ne devaient pas marcher très vite!

mon seul regret c'est qu'il n'y ait pas un moine asiatique tenant un parapluie dans cette photo...(nan, je déconne...)

Hi Claire, read your critique on Jerzy's photo yesterday. Well said. Anyway, see that you are selective in what you put up which is good to see. I have always like the blur shot's, like Ernst Haas's bullfight in Madrid. But you have to have a good subject as well don't you think?
Like this for the ripple effect you have also achieved in the background. Very nice photo Claire.

The most wonderfull blur of the world I think. That's exactly that. Great light and colours - as if master Rembrandt van Rijn gave you his palette and brush. And realy good title - one can feel cosy and safe (looking out through the Cafe window's glass :)). Greetings T.
