Waimakariri River Photo

Photographer’s Note

To take this shot, I took a train journey called the Tranz Alpine from Christchurch to Greymouth, literally from the east coast to the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The trip is 223.8 kilometres long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 16 tunnels, and 5 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 metres. There’s commentary on board and thankfully a couple of photo stops on route.

The photo comes from a scanned negative.

Pour prendre cette photo, j’ai voyagé dans un train qui s'appelle le Tranz Alpine de Christchurch à Greymouth (de la côte est à la côte ouest de l’île sud de la Nouvelle Zélande). La distance est de 223,8km et prend 4h30. Il y a 16 tunnels, 5 viaducs (le plus haut à 73m). Il y a du commentaire à bord et heureusement un ou deux arrêts pour faire des photos en route.

Joli paysage, avecdes nuages bien presents et j'adore.

Salut Nikki. A commendable result from the negative scan to show this impressive landscape from NZ. The photo itself has a good layered framing with a nice showing of the various natural features and an impressive group of clouds for a topping. Good contrast and quite well exposed in the not-so-easy-to-handle light.

Hi Nikki - I just commented on another image from 1995 and am ashamed of how careless I must have treated my negatives, mine from 1995 are almost shredded, breathtaking light and scenery here, I like the autumn colours and the clouds, when I drove here in October there was ice and snow on the road, the previous day I was turned back from the other pass to the south (forgot the name)

Wow, what a lovely view! The river and part of the mountain are bathing in sunshine whereas other parts are almost shaded black by the clouds - that is a lovely contrast that creates a stunning atmosphere. Colours are superb and it was wise to have a little foreground before the river to grasp.

This reminds me of Tan's pictures - an impressive landscape with bold colours and fabulous sky, full of contrast. The scan has lost a bit of sharpness but the shot is full of life and colour and visually pleasing.

Hi Nikki, I think your shot is great, very good composition. Well done for having used the polarizer, it just gave the sky a great effect. I also praise you for a the good work having scanned the photo. I still don't have a digital SLR and most of my shots have to be scanned and then adjusted a bit in the photoshop. It is sooooo hard, specially competing with all the people who have very good digitals and can get really sharp images just like that.

Belle photo, Nikki, j'aime la pureté et la netteté du paysage où ombres et lumières jouent un grand rôle. Le scan d'un négatif donne de meilleurs résultats que le scan papier.

Salut Nikki, difficile de passer a coté de cette photo, de cette merveille devrai je dire !! Comme un gout de bout du monde, déjà la NZ est aux antipodes de la france, et en plus tu m'as l'air d'avoir fait du chemin en train pour l'attraper ;) Le résultat est étonnant, hautement contrasté, très coloré et très NATURE :))
