From Surp Gragos Armenian Church / Diyarbakır - Turkey

Surp Giragos is the only surviving Armenian church in Diyarbakir (Dikranagerd). The church stands alone, far from its original magnificence. Today Diyarbakir's Armenian population consists of only ten families.

Many Armenians from Diyarbakir are now living in the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia and in the Middle East. We wanted this site to be their voice, wishing all Armenians from Diyarbakir who live all around the world to pay attention to our (their) church.

HISTORY OF ST. GIRAGOS CHURCH

First written statements about St. Giragos Church was in Polish traveler Simeon's journals between 1610-1615. Simeon talks about this magnificient church as very "huge" and "elegant" with five altars.Historian G. Inciciyan talks about this church in his collection of books called "Nor Hayasdan" (New Armenia) in his first volume. He mentions that the church was built in 1515 or 1518.
