Photographer’s Note

In Tikal there are many different pyramid complexes. This is one of the first ones that you see when you enter the park. It is small in comparison to the ones in the grand plaza but is very interesting to see. This group of buildings was built to celebrate the end of a 20-year period, called a Katun, in the Maya Long Count calendar. This picture is the South Building on the south side of the group. The south was also associated with the Underworld. The nine stones represent the nine layers of the Underworld.
