Photographer’s Note
Location: This is a chapel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), located just a few blocks from my house in Orem, Utah.
About the Photo: This is my first photo from a digital camera! Yesterday my new camera arrived and I spent the entire day in the backyard and around town testing it out. I took over 300 shots in just one day, that's something I never did with my old film cameras. Most of the shots were just experiments, but this one turned out OK, IMO. Since I'm so new to digital, and don't know very much I'll be more than happy with any critiques/advice anyone wants to give me. Mainly, I just wanted to post this shot as my declaration of independence from film.
Shot taken about an hour after sunset. The light on the front of the church is coming from a street lamp just out of the frame on the right. In real life the sky looked much darker. I got the title for this shot from a sign on the side of the church.

I like this.. the contrast of the building against the dark sky works well..
I would have liked to see some movement though, a car driving by or maybe some peole. Makes it a bit more dynamic.

For a first it is fantastic. The colors are stunning and the golden glow in combination with the deep blue sky is simply marvelous. Well done and congratulkations on the new toy.

It is strange, but I find that the street and its yellow lines add a small graphic side with the pavement which carries out to the entry of the chapel. Beautiful exposure, good clearness. Good technic Ryan.

Hello Ryan!
Welcome to Pleasure Dome... Shooting digital is indeed very liberating and allows so many experimentation. This photo is a good example of what you can achieve with your new toy and I like it. The warm yellow glow from the church is like a welcoming light, so it makes your title even more relevant.
I had the same problem with glowing effect from a light source just aside my lens, and someone told me that with a hood, I should resolve the problem.
Great shot!

Hi Ryan,
There goes your Velvia ;-)
Welcome to the digital world, hope you like it.
It's a very tight crop, but it has still a great mood in the whole scene.
Regards, Henk

Your steeple is a little crooked...but I like the shot.
Digital is a lot of fun...I remember what pushed me over the edge was shooting one early fall morning with DanaRees above Sundance. I managed to squeeze off 4 pictures with my 4x5 while he must have taken close to 75 or 80. And then he was looking at his several hours later while I was waiting a day for mine to come back from the lab. You can see some of the ones he took that day on his page. Look for the aspens and ferns with an unreal ethereal golden glow.
Anyway, very nice. I hope you enjoy your camera.
