Photographer’s Note
Many parts of Afghanistan, especially the militarized locations, are full of landmines. Large, steel "Swiss cheese" metal posts mark the edges of the "official" Soviet minefields, but there are even more unmarked fields. Lest we soldiers find them the hard way, they are marked off behind oncertina wire and these ubiquitous mine markers.
It's not too often to find the mines all lined up in a pretty row, though. We found these on a walk on Christmas morning, all wrapped up in ribbon and everything.
