Blue and Gold Photo

Photographer’s Note

I took this photo for the strong blues and clouds, and the gold of the hills as the light was fairly strong and the clouds layed a shadow across the background and lit the foreground hill. This photo was taken at the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds in Central Oregon.

The colors are stunning and the combinations of the sultry hills and the puffy clouds are great. I love the shadows cast by the clouds upon the hills. I would be tempted to try cropping some of the sky because to me the amnount of it takes away from the beauty of the hills. The textures of the hills are great too.

The light is great. I guess you used a polarizer filter, don't you ? The colors are also great. The only thing I don't get is why should the sky take so much space in the composition. I am trying to imagine the picture with less sky but I am not sure it would be better.

Wonderful stuff here... such an unexpected orientation and use of space. The 1:2 ratio here works beautifully to create a seriously stunning shot.
I can't help but pick fault with the lack of detail in the cloud though... it lets this (otherwise flawless) shot down a little.

I like this shot, given that you have such a wonderful blue sky, it great in include much of that as part of your composition, I did have one clear day that, it fantastic with the open land and big sky. Especially on this very surreal landscape with fantastic layers of different color geology. Love it. Though the light is very strong here but you manage very nicely showing much of details in the dark area. Thanks
