Photographer’s Note

When I was stationed at Fort Huachuca in southeast Arizona, I spent a lot of time driving in and around the Huachuca Mountains, the range that separated the post from Mexico. After a couple months on the job, it became my weekend ritual to leave work Friday afternoon at 1730 and haul ass down to Montezuma Pass in the Coronado National Memorial to watch the sunset. Hot or cold, rain or shine, something drew me to the sweeping view in to Mexico the pass offered. Sometimes I would stay in the parking lot; other times I would hike up to Coronado Peak, the southernmost spur of the Huachucas that jutted down to the international border.

This is a photo from one of my earlier visits to Montezuma Pass, just two months after arriving in Arizona. The colors are made all the more striking because I used a roll of Agfa Ultra 50, known for its wild rendition of the red spectrum. This was originally a square print because of the 6x6 format of the C330f, but I came up with this cropped version for a friend to use as his desktop image.
