Photographer’s Note

I stumbled across this sculpture while at an outdoor art exhibition on Pender Island near my summer cottage. It is evidently a sea dragon. Curiously sea dragons have not played much of a part in Western culture, though land dragons of course are replete in ancient lore. However, the situation is different in Eastern mythology.

Chinese dragons are strongly associated with water in popular belief. There were four major Dragon Kings, representing each of four seas - the East China Sea, South China Sea, Indian Ocean, and Lake Baikal. For centuries many Chinese villages, particularly those close to the ocean, had temples dedicated to their local "dragon king."

For my part, I just enjoyed the view down Boundary Pass, looking toward Vancouver Island. In retrospect, I now see that my dragon was guarding the waterway.
