The Fairy Tale City Hall Photo

Photographer’s Note

It's been a while since I posted my last photo from Basel, with the current heat I don't venture anymore in the city unless some special event attracts me there, for example the visit of two Belgian TE members Denise and Daniel.

After meeting and having a round walk in the old city we came to the Marktplatz with the sun correctly positionned to shoot a hopefully decent picture and this is the one I present you today. The fairy tale city hall was originally built in the XIV th century. In 1501 the members of 15 corporations gathered here to decide Basel would join the Swiss Confederation, after this event the building gained color and the flags of the 12 cantons that belonged to CH at this time. Various other enhancements followed with time, the big tower was added only in 1900.

The inside is as richly decorated as the outside and provides a benefit very much enjoyed these days, behind the thick walls and under the arches, it is coooooooooool !

Hi Jean-Yves, increadibly reach colours, that blue is amasing.
About the distortion, I'm not s sure, as the town hall looks thicker at the top than at the bottom and it looks like leaning towards us. There is a strong distortion and is visible, but a funny thing is that I like it!

Salut Jean. The colopurs are so rich and suit each other beautifully. The rich reds are matched well by the deep blue of the sky. Très belle vue de cette place !
C'est étonnant car tu as pris cette image en fin d'après midi et tu as su tout de même éviter les hordes de piétons.
La place semble vide ! C'est très bien vu ! Ce ciel contrastant avec la pierre rouge est superbe !

Cela fait un moment que je ne consacre du temps pour TE car nous avons beaucoup visité en Corse. Ici dans le nord d'Espagne il fait bien plus frais qu'en Suisse mais les temperatures peuvent monter considérablement l'après-midi si le soleil sort.
Ce bâtiment est l'un de mes préférés en Suisse et j'aime beaucoup comment le rouge ressort contre le ciel si bleu.

Your POV is well chosen in this interesting shot of the city. The rather ordered flow of the people across the street in good light and shadow adds an extra dynamic of interest. The hues and tones of the buildings meanwhile are alluring, contrasting superbly with the sky. All the exterior details are well seen - including the grafitti on the little barrier. Great view of this building and the surrounding square. The decoration of the building is quite fantastic, as are the colours - almost out of character for the conservative Swiss (or at least that is my bias - mayhbe I need to visit to see what the Swiss are really like). Well done!

Good details and nice colors in this wide-angle photo of the square, JY. Nice deep tones, good upright perspective, and pleasant to see the pedestrians traversing the fine surroundings in the summer heat.

On the other hand, this was not really difficult from a photographic point of view. How about the following photographic challenge for you: within the next 3 months you go to a location of your choice and on the same day shoot at least 3 photos for TE, none of them with a focal length less than 60 mm and at least one of them clearly falling into the "people" category.

C'est la saturation des couleurs à cause du polarisant qui DGSR ici! Par ailleurs, l'hotel de ville est superbe et bien cadré! Bravo!
J'ai déjà eu l'occasion de rencontrer Daniel mais il n'était pas accompagné de Denise... En tout cas, j'espère que vous avez passé une excellente journée et la canicule ne vous a pas trop assomé!

A pleasant shot, Jean-Yves, full of light and colour, a very attractive red/golden/deep blue colour contrast is caught here. Been in Basel, seen this city hall, but never in such nice shooting conditions.

Malgré que tu n'avais pas sorti la grosse artillerie, tu avais malgré tout choisi de bonnes optiques.
La preuve avec cette presque absence de déformations.
Un ciel sacrément bleu. Ou était donc caché ton polarisant?
C'est un excellent souvenir d'une après midi passée en ta compaganie.

Hi Jean-Yves. That sure is some beautiful architecture you've got there. The saturation is off the charts. Too bad about the wall in the bottom left but the people have a good arrangement to them.

The dark colors and the high contrast gives this image a very strong nostalgic element, like a photo taken in the 60's.

Wow! Ca claquent les couleurs à Bâle! Rien à voir avec l'austérité de la Cité de Calvin ici... Malgré le côté un peu kitch, c'est très photogénique et en plus vous êtes passés au moment où la lumière était parfaite (Terror Tours c'est pas mal non plus au niveau de l'organisation). La canicule fait qu'il n'y a pas grand monde sur la placeet ton coup de zoom salvateur a évité que ces personnes se prennent les immeubles sur la gueule! :o)

Jean-Yves, c'est une vue superbe et haute en couleurs de cette place magnifique. Les piétons animent le paysage. Le rouge du bâtiment et le bleu du ciel font un contraste des meilleurs.
