North Korean railway carriage Photo

Photographer’s Note

Russian train #19 halfway through its 7-day long trans-siberian journey from Moscow to Beijing.

The photo is taken in Russian territory at Novosibirsk station (in Siberia).

This lone North Korean sleeper carriage was attached to the train consist for part of the journey. It was filled with North Korean communist officials (complete with Kim Il Sung badges on their clothes) who were bound for Pyong'yang after a completing a diplomatic mission to Moscow.

All Russian train carriages carry destination boards - in this case, my photo depicts the rarely seen Russian-DPRK (North Korean) destination sign.

a photo that tells a story ... very interesting and colorful! A part of the world which is not mentioned very often on TE - and you help us to understand a bit more of this place ...

Just a documentary picture yet a good photo for this site: from this shot I could learn how this mysterious train looks :)

A few years ago when Kim Jong Il visited president Putin in Moscow he also then travelled (9 days one direction if I remember well) by train: probably he's afraid of flying or somehow overly paranoid...

Hi Russel - interesting documentation, I didn't know it was possible to travel there by train, I am thinking of doing a segment of the T-sib in september (Krasnoyarsk-Beijing)

you are right,it is rarely shot. I don't saw it. But I remember, when leader of North Korea (Kim Chen Ir)went to Moscow by train trough all Siberia and Ural,it was a biggest problem for many thousend russian passengers,because the train shedule was broken.
