Equilibrium zone of the glacier of Moiry.
The upper part of a glacier that receives most of the snowfall is called the accumulation zone.
The deposition or ablation zone is where more ice is lost through melting than gained from snowfall. The altitude where the two zones meet is called the equilibrium line. At this altitude, the amount of new snow gained by accumulation is equal to the amount of ice lost through ablation.

La ligne d'équilibre d'un glacier est la limite qui sépare la zone du glacier où le bilan en masse est excédentaire (zone d'accumulation) et la zone du glacier où le bilan en masse est déficitaire (zone d'ablation). Cette ligne d'équilibre est matérialisée durant les mois chauds par la limite entre neige persistante (les neiges éternelles) et glace apparente.
