Old Man Mentawai Photo

Photographer’s Note

This shot was taken in the Mentawai Islands. We had chartered a yacht to explore the islands for 2 weeks. One day the first mate offered to take us to a nearby village in the runabout. We walked around and took some shots. The village was very, very poor and very remote. One of the most amazing trips I've ever done.

Hello Van, I like the frame and the resistances of the B/W. The first plane of the man to a side and the way to the other giving depth to the composition are very interesting. Congratulations by the taking.

Woah... I am surprised to find a shot from this place on TE! This is actually a man that probably used to belong to the old Mentawai tribes but that were destroyed by the government during decades and more, and still are. It is unfortunate to see these people who normally live in the forest find themselves in between the so called developed world and their traditional ways. A terrible fate of living in between worlds that drives all beings on this planet to extreme levels of poverty.
