Hyde Park is a beautiful oasis in the downtown area of Sydney. It covers two large city blocks (with a defined north and south half). It was established as a “common” in 1810 by Governor Macquarie and named after Hyde Park in London. It began its life as Sydney’s first racecourse and after became its first cricket ground. Today it is a tranquil setting for general relaxation and lunchtime picnics. It is a favourite retreat of office workers at mid day in this area.

The layout and beautification scheme was established in 1927. An avenue of giant fig trees planted in the early 1930’s, runs through the middle from north to south, from the Archibald Fountain to the Pool of Remembrance at the ANZAC Memorial.

The scene you have before you now is looking north through (one half of) this green tunnel of trees towards the Archibald Fountain. The south side, looking towards the ANZAC Memorial, can be seen here. There are currently 122 trees in this avenue. Some of these are diseased. Three different diseases have been identified that are putting these trees at risk. The city of Sydney is working hard to save these trees, and at coordinated tree replacement.

Other highlights not previously mentioned in this park include: the Sandringham Gardens, and Nagoya Gardens (with an outdoor chess set).

The park is a great place for photography, or just to relax.

The day of this photo was kind of a grey day, so there was great saturation, but also white skies (the light at the end of the tunnel). Post processing included some adjustments for shadows and highlights, level adjustments for balance, cropping and sharpening for this post.

I received some good advice from Cato (limaz) about cropping the top to close the tunnel in even tighter. I have created a workshop to demonstrate this. I think it looks good.

Hi John.
Now that's what I call green:) The saturation is immense, and I really like how the gray branches give a nice counterpoint to the green foliage. I would suggest cropping the light coming through the foliage at the top of the shot just to give it a more of an enclosed feel.

Very nice, I hate Sydney, stayed out of it as much as possible when living in Bathurst but this is a lovely shot of the park. I had heard of it ,naturaly, but never stayed in town long enough to go sight seeing.

Hello John,
Unlike pudipie I think Sydney is a stunning and delightful city. This scene is only one example of how glorious the city is. Your greens are very vivid, a beautiful tone indeed. Wonderful positioning of the light posts, leading into the famous fountain. Good use of frame also!
Matt

Hi John. Great shot - your POV and crop is perfect. The leading line of lamp-posts works well to draw the eye into the image. Well done!

Hi John,
This is a really nice looking scene. I have walked here many times and never saw the opportunity for such a pic. What time of day was this taken? I have noticed the small aperture used. A really good scene, I like it.

Hi John,
Ya, this is indeed a beautiful green tunnel! The people and the lamp posts make the trees even bigger & taller. Nice POV, lighting & colors. Happy New Year!

Hi John. Very good composition of this site in central Sydney. It is a good place to walk through on a hot day. Your image has excellent clarity and colour. Murray.

Hi John,
Wonderful saturated lush green frames this slick gray walk way adorned with the wonderful round street lamps. I also love the little bit of sky poking through this background of this lovely image.
Regards, Tom

Hello John,
I guess it will take some time to grow replacement trees, I understand the present ones are over 70 years now..!
Interesting place, and the fact trees get sick is a proof they don't stand the pollution in the air and otherwise created by humans...
A good photo documentary, fine details!
Greetings,
