Photographer’s Note
Somewhere I have the notes for the trek around the Aries valley, but under all the rubbish I have not found them yet.
All I remember about this particular place was the traditional wood work craft.
They made cups, baskets and most specially the traditional long trumpet horn. I brought one, nearly eight foot long (2.5m)and my daughter is very accomplished at blowing it. Its at home now and gets used for visitors. It was orginally used to communicate with in the valley and to warn of danger and many of the people can still use it for fun.
All the things made I saw were made of conifers like spruce with the small branches cut and stripped to be used like string.
Very long shutter exposure using the door frame to hold the camera still. Could not get the window out of the shot so its a bit bright and over exposed.

Hi Simon, is a good composition in which samples the work of the day to day of the carpenters with the factory its tools and the atmosphere of the concentration in a the work. The only one I in any case stick as you say in your note is over exposed of the light in the window, a good image, likes.
A greeting.

Hello Simon. A picture from the world of the work. Not spectacularly. But one sees pictures of this kind rarely with trekearth. The photo is a valuable document for an occupation, which disappears slowly. The picture is well taken. Best regards, Wolfgang.

The bright window doesn't bother me as it adds to the mood of the photo. Wish I could see a little more of their faces, particularly the gentleman to the left. Nice environmental photo.

Hi Simon!
Over the past few weeks I've seen some very interesting pictures you captured during your trips in Romania. Now you come with another good one.
Very typical woodworking shop... probably attached to someone's house. Probably he's been making a living out of it for decades. I don't know the legislation but I can't help to wonder how such people will survive the incoming EU joining. Things will change in Romania. Craftsman like him will have to adapt to the new rules. I don't believe he will be terribly affected by this change considering that he's working on wood. He might have to bring a fire extinguisher or a first aid kit in maybe have an accountant keep count of how many pieces of something or something else he's made every month and how many he's sold or given away and other such annoying practices that for someone living almost at the end of the world, making a living the same way as his father and grandfather probably did, will appear at least unwelcome. Others, whose craft deals with, or everydaylife is based upon working with food or alcohol or stuff like that, will have a lot more to suffer through the changing times ahead. Just in case there's anyone reading this and confused about Romania's joining to the EU, it'll happen in about 30 hours.
I love the raw color of the wood pieces along the left hand wall and those wood chips, or whatever they're called in English, laying on the floor. It reminds me of my grandpa who had a shop just like this. As a kid i loved to walk through the piles of wood chips, or play with them. I also love the apparent mess in the shop, it looks so real. I bet they know where every little thing is or wouldn't take them more than a few seconds to look for it...
I love how you captured them at work and this actually shows how important is that window and the bright light messing up with your exposure. I bet you they barely had a light bulb, if any, hung somewhere on the ceiling. They were probably working there only using the natural light. I believe the overexposed window leads your eyes away from it wit your attention falling firts on the main craftman whome by the way you captured very well and then to his helper and the rest of the shop. I think that light is a very important element in you composition.
Happy New Year, dear Simon!
Iulian
PS Your horn is called "bucium" in Romanian. It may have other regional names but this is the most prevalent.

Simon: for work in film, this one gets very high marks. Great play on the light and fine environmental and occupational detals. cheers, c

What a shot !!!
I don't agree with ninaL that there is some problem with light on this photo.
I think that exactly the light is great.
I feel a lot of love on the photo.
I like that old craft.
Regards, Igor

based on the fact that you used slide (positive) film for this shot, you controlled the light / exposure beautifully !. with such strong light from the window, there was a high chance of over / under exposure.....

I think that this exposure is not overexposed.
Fantastic lite you captured here besides the moment itself.
