Motutaiko in the frame Photo

Photographer’s Note

Hi all.

This is Motutaiko Island on Lake Taupo. This is also the scene from our camp site at Motutere Bay.

The island has a rich Maori history in that the local Maori used to place their chiefs on the island (in a cave) when they passed away and as such the island is tapu, which means you can’t land on it.

It is about 4 KM’s from shore and makes a nice place to visit on a calm hot day, just don’t set foot on it. You can still take in it’s natural beauty cruising around the outside.

Olá Paul, spectacular framing of the curious Maori island bettween the branches. The strong foreground is very appealing and it makesa verycreative composition. Excellent depth, beautiful colors and well managed lighting. Love the textures in foreground.

Hi Paul,
Your select good POV has allowed you to do a very creative setting and with an artistic touch.
I like how the trunk of the tree and his branches create this nice natural frame to the island and the lake.
The blue very soft tones of the sky and the water contrast strongly with green and brown of foreground.
Great photo, my friend, has a great graphism also.

Very good composition where the tree is really useful for the composition. Why? The tree breakes the armony, but is good. The tree can catch our attention.

Hi Paul - fine scenery to start with, what makes it work really well is the shape of the tree which fills the remaining empty spots, wonderful how the closeup and distant parts are both in sharp focus.

I never knew about not being able to land on the island... I hope there's signs up warning people to stay away.
Summer in Taupo is great - but a bit too cold in winter to camp...
It's a good composition, especially with the tree branch and leaves in the picture. Well done Paul

This shot looks as it it required some climbing to get the perspective right. Now don't tell me that the trunk was very low and you stood on both feet. The framing works good, the DOF is great creates a lot of depth here. The leaves really fit around the island perfectly. Good job, would be well worth some climbing;)

your composition transmits calmness. I can't imagine that this is the sight of your campinground. Absolutely stunning! I like very much the fact that still nowadays people are not allowed to land on the island. Good to know that at least somewhere in this world we can respect old traditions.

nice natural frame for showing us the island. Nice composition and nice DOF work here, but I miss something more... don't know what, maybe an emotion, just like your other pictres. But don't worry I know what you meant to do here... to show this island in a very beautiful way because just point and shot to one island in the middle of the sea it wouldn't be so good as it is now.

It's always such a pleasure to see your pics. You seem to be consistently posting great photos. This is one is no exception.
Partially framing a subject with the shape of a tree and its overhanging foliage is nothing new but you've done a particularly good job of it with this photo. The light management, colours, and image quality are so good. I also like your composition but can't help but wonder how it would have looked if you'd lowered your POV very slightly so that the horizon would appear a little lower in relation to the tree. Oh well, it was just a thought...

Hey Paul! How nice to see the Bay of Plenty! I read about it and I´ve been there in 1998. Well, I went to the jet boats at Taupo and I went to the nice White Island by helicopter, flying over this beautiful bay! So I am happy to see your picture, that makes me remember that nice times!
