Photographer’s Note

Unlike the muted National Day celebrations in my country, our neighbours in the west put a lot of effort into it. One of the more spectacular events taking place is the parading of school children along the main street Karl Johan downtown Oslo, which leads up to the royal castle. Members of the royal family will receive them, waving from the castle balcony.

Many Norwegians own at least one bunad, a costly traditional garment from the province of their hometown, which they will wear with pride during these special occasions.
