Photographer’s Note
Originally the plan for the day was to take some photo’s of the three bridges designed by Santiago Calatrava in the Haarlemmermeer community. I didn’t leave too early as the weather got better only later in the afternoon and it is only about a 20 minutes drive from where I live. I had been at the other two bridges already and at some other places I found along the road so this was the last spot for the day. When I came to this bridge called “Citer” it was already close to sunset, this was not planned however. But once the occasion is there better make use of it.
Santiago Calatrava, one of the most renowned architects in the field of bridges, in 1999 was chosen after a competition among three architects to design three bridges for the Haarlemmermeer community, crossing the Hoofdvaart channel.
For the Hoofdvaart, Calatrava designed a 'family' of three cable stayed bridges with very similar characteristics. Just as with his previous designs, the human body stood model for these bridges. All three bridges have a main steel pylon in the form of a spindle, which varies its position from vertical to inclined along the Hoofdvaart, as travellers pass from bridge to bridge. The inclined steel pylon which has both an esthetical and a constructive function is characteristic for Calarava’s design.
As landmarks, the pylons pierce the sky and at the same time accentuate the geometrical lines of the polder landscape.
The three bridges are named after a harp, lyre and lute because the stayed cables look like the strings of a music instrument. The one in the photo is called The Lyre (De Citer in Dutch) which are two bridges actually. One for cyclists parallel to the Hoofdvaart and crossing the road and one for the roadtraffic crossing the Hoofdvaart. The three bridges were officially opened on 1 July 2004 by Queen Beatrix.

Hey Harko!
Prachtig!
Mooi, mooi, mooi!! Dennis

What a perfect diagonal! I love it. We also have a spectacular structure created by Calatrava in Lisbon. It is the roof of the train station called “Gare do Oriente”. Well done.

Hello Harko
A very original plane that generates a beautiful composition.
Intense the blue one like drop curtain, enormously emphasizes the structure of the first plane, the reflections on the water, superb.
Opportune and excellent work, congratulations.

Hi Harko
I love Calatrava's architecture but didn't know he'd built a few bridges in the Netherlands. This one is very spectacular and I like how you framed it with the point right in the corner. The deep blue sky helps it stand out so well.
