Photographer’s Note

Very old picture, but important in history. This is the famous "São Simão” Canal, formed by Paranaiba River, between Minas Gerais state (on the right – municipality of Santa Vitória) and Goiás state (on the left). It's important to emphasize that the river of a width of almost one kilometer funneled abruptly in a very deep canal of less than 100 meters
of width, forming a ravine with high speed running water that created a boom (like a continuous thunder) which were heard many kilometers far from the place.
Well, all this vastness, including the bridge and the small village, is today submerged, forming the enormous hydroelectric dam of “São Simão”. This magnificent natural formation disappeared shortly after this photo, when floodgates to form the great lake were closed. The quality of the photo is bad because it was taken at a time when there were no computers, nor video-cassettes, much less digital cameras in Brazil, and to make it even worse, the plane was a very unstable single-engined aircraft. I believe that, for young people or for those who did not have the chance to see it, the photo is a good register. The camera used to take this photo is a Praktica/Pentacon, reflex, 50 mm, made in Eastern Germany, which takes excellent photos until today.
