Photographer’s Note

No, this is not Dallas (or any other American city) in the sixties.

This is a lazy Sunday afternoon, in the deserted streets of Geneva’s city centre. Swiss order is not a vain concept. The gentleman waiting to cross the street, and his fellow dog, both know it. There is not a single vehicle on sight and yet they stand there, until they are allowed to walk. When I say there isn’t a car on sight, I mean I can cross that street back and forward a hundred times before any motor engine pops up.

Don’t get me wrong, I do my best to be alike. After all I think integration (in the sense of being in harmony with one’s environment) is the most accomplished form of immigration. But Swiss patience sometimes gets on my Latin nerves, and I then realize I still have a long way to go before I can melt in the landscape and go incognito in the meanders of Swiss nationality.

I imagine my fellow compatriot at a crossroad in Delhi or Bangkok. Would he ever be able to make a step forward? I don’t think so. Islands are not to be mistaken with bridges.
