Photographer’s Note

The Old Market of Siem Reap, also known as Phsar Chas. The market sits in the middle of town, at least in the middle of the "tourist" part of town right on the main street next to the river. This is the meat section leading into the fruit and vegetable section, noticed by the bananas hanging next to the meat at the end. The market is an interesting mix of everything. If it can be found in one's house, it can be bought here.

I found this scene especially interesting because of the age of the butcher, which couldn't be more than 10 or 11 years old. I just wish she was a little sharper but it really is very dark inside the market and combined with her motion, the shutter speed and what looks like a little off-kilter focus point, well - I never said I was anything but a beginner.

This was taken at 1/10 sec @ ISO1600 handheld.

It may be a little "bright"...

Another shot from the meat market - its a great documentary photo to see a child working in an environment like that.

hi john,she looks very at home in this rather greasy place:)i find the colors and the angle too good to see the soft focus or brightness in the photo you have in the distance a small part a little overexposed but that`s all.

Hi John,

I like this one! The little kid working with a big butcher's knive and looking at it with such a dedication.
Previously, I used to work for a child-based not for profit organization. Quite some people there would scream with such a picture that children should play and be at school. The fact is that most children would never be at school if they would not help their parents as well. They have to pay for books, pens, shoes to go to school, uniform etc. And that money does have to be earned in some way.

Nice shot! Love how she's standing in the open spot - framed by sausages.

I like this image..it portrays a slice of life we dont see in the west. A strange sight to see such a young girl surrounded by dead meat ! As for sharpness.. I agree with Furachan..sharpness is over rated. We are meant to be artists first, not technicians..and having said that you have done a mighty job ..even with VR.

All things considered, I think I'll go for the bananas hanging up at the end. Those are bananas aren't they!

Interesting little series - I'm so glad we can't smell it.
