Photographer’s Note

Hello folks.
The other day my wife and I had a small trip on a tourist boat on the Göta canal. The canal streches from Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast to Söderköping on the east coast. The construction of the canal started in 1810 and was finished in 1832, so this year it is 175 years since the opening (see WS). 58000 soldiers made 7 million days work (one day work = 12 hours) The canal is three meters deep and was of course dug without any machines. On our boat trip, from a place called Berg to Borensberg, we passed 9 locks. All locks we passed but one was manoeuvred automatically. The last one was totally manual. The trip took 3˝ hours. Lots of people goes with their boats from one coast to the other during their holiday.
The canal is sometimes called the ‘divorce ditch’, maybe because of the captain (mostly the man) shouts to the crew (wife) to do this or that but the crew doesn’t always fullfill his demands to his expectations....
This photo is a funny and unusual summer house (‘lusthus’ in Swedish) that we passed during our trip. Here you can see how the canal winds. It was a very pleasant calm and beautiful trip.
