This is a more modern part of the barn complex on the Robertson farm. The cement foundations prove that it was built somewhat more recently than 1867 (as my previous barn was), but it too has been supplanted by a far more recent steel structure.
Thanks to Tom O’Donnell (gunbud), we know why barns are traditionally painted red. In this case, there is another reason: the colour was an important part of the business profile. Until recently, this farm was a popular "U-Pick" strawberry farm, where people could come to pick their own strawberries and then purchase their harvest by weight. The red paint was regularly refreshed, though it did wear out after seasons of exposure, as you can see by the lower reaches of the doors.

Tech: shot in RAW, minimal cropping to straighten horizon, resized and sharpened for TE (sharpening reduced to 25%)

Thanks for looking and for your critiques and suggestions

Have a berry happy day.

Hello Silke,
I really love this, the close up verison of an old rustic barn. The textures and color really grab you. This would really be a great photo in full size on a wall...beautiful. It speaks country...quiet...peaceful...Nice work!

three colours make a magic picture !

Hi Silke,

I like the minimalistic style of this shot. You had a great photographic eye in seeing it.

Compliments!

Gio

I like these kinds of detail shots, and you found an appealing subject in this weathered old barn. The simple colour palette of grey, red and green works well, but there's a problem with both the exposure and the saturation.
It looks to me like the shot is rather over-exposed and that you pushed the saturation a bit far in PP. The greens especially look rather unnatural. I think setting some minus exposure compensation on the camera (I use -0.7 by default on my D40 and -0.3 on the D70s - the meters are calibrated differently), and maybe even toning down the saturation rather than boosting it would have worked better.
Other than these technical issues it's well taken - the original concept works well.

Cheers,
Ben

Hello Silke,
Wonderfull capture, almost modern art ! Very nice pov.
TFS and have a nice day

I agree with Ben. The shot is well seen but not perfectly executed (which it needs to be because it has no other legs to stand on but technical excellence). In addition to his comments on the colours, I would say you need to give this shot a hefty dose of sharpening too. We need to be able to see every line and groove in those planks of wood. The shot needs to be so sharp it hurts!! :-)

Hi Silke, lovely detail of this fascinating old barn, splendid colors, great graphic composition, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Silke,
This is an absolutely wonderful composition, so simple yet so decorative.
Greetings,
Gert

Hi Silke
this picture is amazing because the composition is minimalist; I like the graphism, the contrasts of colors and the cropping.
Ites a very nice picture
Bertrand

Bonjour Silke
bonne composition de cette porte rouge qui ressort bien de cette vieille grange qui a sans doute connu des jours meilleurs, ;)

Hello Silke,

This is so interesting with its boards, geometric patterns and strong colours! You have captured it well with sharp details.

It is so different from the barns in England which are built from random stone, huge stone arches and small windows.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

p.s. interesting notes!

The grey colour of the barn itself almost looks as if you have de-saturated that. It's a good minimal image with the vibrant red and green really catching theeye.
Kath

Hello Silke,
Let me first say i like the image a lot. I have deep respect for people who are making pictures from subjects i never see myself. I would walk straight by such a scene without paying attention to it. Therefor deep respect for people who see such things and can record them also...as you did here...wonderful..!!!
I have read some comments and it seems people have some problems with the colours and contrast...they have a small point i think.
For that i made a ws...just boosting up the colours and contrast and levels.
But looking it only as a photo i like it a lot..great subject, great note.
Regards, Henk

Hi Silke,
Wonderful color contrast between the red door and the unpainted barn. I love the placment of the door slightly off center. Very clear colors and sharp details to the old wood.
Thanks for the credit on the color red.
Regards, Tom

Good day. In a friendly way

Hi Silke,
The red door on this grey wall in indeed a good contrasting detail even though the effect could be stronger with some direct light. Off centering is good and well balanced by the small window.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hello Silke.
WOW nice compo, texture and what a slap in the face. The contrast of the door vs the old grey plancks is ++. Must be useful for the old man to find where the door is.

What a great capture of this old barn.
The colours are beautiful, good sharpness, details and framing.
Thanks for sharing!

Greetings, Nel

What a beautiful capture of the barn. Love the framing of your image.
The colors are perfect in my opinion, but I do agree with some of the earlier posts that it could be sharpened just a touch.
Well seen.

Hi Silke!
A classic photo job, and i like very much.
Composition and colors are wonderful.

Shots of architectural details are tough to pull off in my experience, Silke, but you've done very well here. The gray wood really sets of the red door and green grass, like in a partially desaturated photo except that here it looks completely natural. Great textures, and the little bit of wood under the bottom of the door is a nice accent. Regards, Ken.

Hello Silke,
Did I really miss this artistic creation..?!
The subject is well framed, with effective colour contrast, good textures in the wall...
Interesting to see how the door is worn by the tooth of time!

Hi Silke,

The age and decay combined with that strong red are striking together. Wonderful except that really communicates the mood of the full .. I wish that beam coming out of the bottom of the broken door was a nudge sharper .. I think I wish that anyway .. very nice.

take care,

John

The colors here are so vivid. A really nice simple photo. I like this style alot. TFS

Bonsoir Silke,

Assez impressionnantes ces portes d'un autre temps que l'on s'obstine à repeinturer en rouge écarlate, année après année comme si on voulait masquer l'usure du temps qui s'est attaquée au bas des portes.

Jean-Pierre

Hello Silke!
I do like barns, and this one is especially picturesque and colourful!
Just a pity it's not a pick-your-own farm any longer.
I come from a a region famous for its strawberries ( see my pictures 1-2-3-4-59-61 ), and we also picked our own strawberries in Quebec on Orleans island, in 1988. so your post "talks to me".
Plus, I like the composition of your picture and the colours. It's like graphic art!
Thanks for sharing!
Marie Louise.

Hello Silke

A simple, but very graphical image.
It pleases the series to me of shades that are reflected in the wood. The tones and it geometricas forms, constitute a good composition.

John

Hi,
Just come across this. Excellent. I love old buildings, rust, weathered wood, barns. Yours has all the right igredients to make for a delicious image! Thanks!!
