First sunny saturday since quite a while. A public garden in Paris. From a balloon.

Like gravity, the influence of two bodies on each other is inversely proportional not only to the square of their distance but possibly even the cube of the distance between them.

Edward T. Hall, anthropologist and father of proxemics

Communications scholars began studying personal space and people’s perception of it decades ago, in a field known as proxemics. But with the population of the world climbing above 6 billion, urban corridors becoming denser and people with wealth searching for new ways to separate themselves from the masses, interest in the issue of personal space — that invisible force field around your body — is intensifying. Humans tend to avert eye gaze if they feel someone is standing too close. They retreat to corners, put distance between themselves and strangers, and sit or stand equidistant from one another like birds on a wire.

According to scientists, personal space involves not only the invisible bubble around the body, but all the senses. People may feel their space is being violated when they experience an unwelcome sound, scent or stare: the woman on the bus squawking into her cellphone, the co-worker in the adjacent cubicle dabbing on cologne, or the man in the sandwich shop leering at you over his panini But whether people have become more protective of their personal space is difficult to say. Studies show people tend to adapt, even in cities, which are likely to grow ever more crowded based on population projections.

Hall even put numbers to the unspoken rules. He defined the invisible zones around us and attributed a range of distance to each one: intimate distance (15 to 45 cm); personal distance (45 cm to 120 cm); social distance (1.2 m to 3.6 m); and public distance (about 3.6 m or more). But personal space is not merely a numbers game. Preferences differ from culture to culture. Scholars have found that Americans generally prefer more personal space than people in Mediterranean and Latin American cultures for instance.

Bonjour Vincent,
géniale idée pour la composition et pour le titre. C'est en effet un exemple assez convaincant de la validité de cette théorie.
Ca me rappelle les cours de physique de ma jeunesse où l'on voyait les petites molécules se maintenir à distance respectable l'une de l'autre :)
La présence des arbres et de l'ombre donne du rythme à la photo et le résultat est vraiment génial.

Propos et illustration intéréssants. La photo est assez déroutante. Effectivement la ligne blanche est bienvenue. On dirait presque un drapeau. Sinon, il est interessant de constater ,à la lumière de ta note, que les gens sont presque tous à distance équidistante les uns des autres. CQFD.

Indeed people seem to be evenly spread. Good composition with trees and diagonal path. Path is overexposed I think, but works well as such.

Very nice shot...

I was wondering what all the white blobs were until I opened the thumbnail!
This works really well Vincent - I like how the white line of the pathway cuts straight as a die diagonally through the frame, and the arrangement of the relaxing people has a certain harmony.
The only thing that disturbs the composition is that square plot of bushes on the left, but it doesn't really matter.
It's a strong, graphic image - I like it.

Funny view of these people sunbathing on the green fields in Paris. Looks much better than certain well known crowded beaches where thousand of people lie side by side.. Excellent colors, very nice composition!

Il s’agit du parc Citroën, du moins je crois... Je m’y suis rendu mais je n’ai pas osé me mettre en ligne pour la billeterie puis pour l’ascension. J’ai trouvé ce parc vraiment particulier, alors qu’il semble sortir directement du béton...

La diagonale qui sépare parfaitement la composition accentue l’aspect graphique de la scène et rappelle un drapeau de plongée... Il est intéressant de voir la distance presque similaire entre les gens et la note est absolument fascinante. Bien réfléchi...

Very interesting Vincent. We all experience personal space issues but I didn't know about a scientific study. Your photo demonstrates this perfectly. I can just imagine if someone sat right next to one of the other people here what the reaction would be. ;D Excellent bird's eye view.

I had to look twice what it was, but this is really very clever composed and captured., That strong digonal white line is very powerful in the overall composition and the humans look like little colourful ants...very ngood..!!!

I had to read your note twice to follow the ideas of personal space. I also think there is a cultural aspect in personal - notice how the citizens of densely populated countries react to this concept. What comes to mind is Japan and China where in these cultures it is OK to crowd and shove and they seem to have a herd mentality. While in Western Europe and N.A. we all need and want space - even in a crowded elevator. Your image reminds of a geography discussion I had in graduate school discussing the patterns of plants on a uniform plane. The plants always seek out a hexagonal relationship to each other with one plant in the center of the hexagon. The drier or less adaptive the environment the larger the hexagon. Enough! This is an inventive image and an image that took some serious thought to compose. The diagonal path so striking and dividing the image into two areas and each area with something different to discover and explore. The whole scene is balanced by the two trees. Bold colors, interesting patterns, and a note to ponder. Bravo, well done!

C'est génial ça Vincent, salut :)
Un POV totalement déroutant qui permet de visualiser ces p'tites fourmis d'humain en train de larver au soleil ... Ce qui me fascine c'est comment les gens se répartissent en utilisant au maximum l'esapce et surtout en calculant d'etre le plus éloigné possible les uns des autres, calcul des baricentres, des points médians, tout y passe lol

The bird's view is amazing as it could be, but that parsonal space! It looks like as if the people measured the space between them. It is funny, but this photo is such a powerful clue for that scientific theory. I appreciate your idea of adding this note for this quite interesting shot. Congrats!

It's quite a POV! Sooo eye catching! It looks like a flag. I like that you didn't put the white line on the diagonal while keeping a certain symmetry.

It is also very suitable to illustrate the interesting note about a branch of Science that I had never heard about.
