Photographer’s Note

In Alaska's Glacier Bay, the size of Nature's creations dwarfs that of man. In this shot, taken from the upper deck of my 56,000 ton, 720' long cruise ship, we see the 70-passenger expedition ship 'Sea Lion', registered in Seattle, several hundred metres from the face of Margerie Glacier. Even as I concentrated on getting this man-made object to give some scale to the massive cliffs, giant pieces of ice calved from the glacier and crashed into the sea. My ship, the MS Statendam, was obliged to stay at a respectable distance: I was so thankful I had invested in the Nikon 70-300VR lens before departure. The telescopic effect is both deceiving and impressive - I was a good 500 metres from the 'Sea Lion'!
I will post another shot from this magic place, but neither will really do justice to the grandeur - it is simply something you should all see for yourselves.
