Photographer’s Note

'Beyond Limits' sale of modern and contemporary sculpture at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire.

This piece is a new sculpture of Kate Moss by artist Marc Quinn;it is an enlarged, three metre-high version of Myth[Sphinx]-the statue that Quinn produced last year, depicting Moss in an extreme yoga position, with her ankles and arms contorted around her ears.

Like the original, the new version is made out of white-painted bronze.

According to Alex Platon,a specialist in modern art at Sotheby's auction house,''Myth[Sphinx] is a blow-away piece:she has a completely mesmerising, Medusa-like effect.It is a piece that constantly plays tricks on the observer.Though the work is over three metres high,its size seems to change according to the position from which it is seen.At the same time, it is a real testament to the compelling, tantalising, power of beauty.''

For this post I decided to show it in close-up;maybe a shot of the whole piece next time[?]

Un blanco impecable y un cielo de bonito colorido. Quizás el árbol que hay a la izquierda de la imagen distrae un poco la atención del motivo central.

Hi Jean,
I like the smooth texture of this statue, and also the Kate Moss figure. Colors and sharpness are excellent.. i just wish we would see more of the statue by framing lower and and a bit more on the right side... a good one nevertheless!

Hi Jean. A really good photo but, for me, a completely pointless piece of sculpture - especially as it's right outside a truly beautiful place like Chatsworth.

It seems testimony only to the current culture of celebrity. It'll be a great day when we start to celebrate achievement and excellence again and consign being famous for the sake of being famous to the tip!

Hello Jean,
You carefully composed your tightly cropped composition with this marvelous new sculpture and it works very well. A complex sculpture like this one is tricky to photograph with so many possibilities available. The high clouds act like a giant diffuser which gives you just right intensity of lighting (not too harsh or too flat and dull for this sculpture). Kate Moss is a beautiful woman and the sculpture did her great justice in his portrayal of her. Modern sculpture seems to be either outstanding or hideous and ugly. Excellent work!

Very funny to see this statue in your collection. Some days ago I visited the Groninger Museum in the north of the Netherlands and saw the same (smaller) Kate Moss.
I like the way you succeeded in getting nuance in the whites.
