Photographer’s Note
This is a salute to men and women of higher learning like for instance the great Irish mathematician George Salmon of Trinity College depicted in this statue here. These men and women around the world further the arts and sciences for all our benefit.
Trinity College in Dublin which is the backdrop of this statue was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth. Trinity along with the University of Dublin form Ireland's oldest university.
The depicted George Salmon served as Provost of Trinity from 1888 till his death in 1904. Salmon's math career focused on algebraic geometry and along with Arthur Cayley he discovered the 27 lines on the cubic surface.
The Trinity campus is adjacent to the Temple Bar district in Dublin and it features wonderful old architecture and a library that houses the Book of Kells. My timing for a visit here was good as the campus was quite festive as a result of several ongoing commencement activites.
Cheers,
Doug

Hi Doug,
Your POV is excellent showing the the statue that is backed up with the building of higher learing both of which are seen in dramatic details. The color contrast between the deep blue summer sky and and the grey building is stunning. You got an unusual clear sky for this beauty.

Hello Douglas,
I like this image very much, and your note. Indeed, I thought you were a mathematician or physicist as I read your message (I am a theoreticl physicist). I was so very impressed when I saw the library athe Trinity College, with the busts of some of the great minds lining the walls — the first one on the right was the bust of Isaac Newton. I don't know wheter you've been to Washington, DC, but this is also evocative of the statue of Joseph Henry, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institutio, who had come to Washington, DC from Princeton University, where he had been a professor of physics.
In your image, the dark stonework of the building (possibly Georgian in style) serves as a dramatic backdrop to the statue of George Salmon. I remember the excellent shot you posted earlier from the confusing street signs in Ireland.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hi Doug. I noticed your profile picture has changed. I like it. It reminded me of the time my own daughter was born. Excellent picture and very clear. The statue look great against the elegant building. The sky look great with its clean blue colour. Thanks Doug.

Very good picture of this statue, which seems almost to be alive. The angle of building roof in the background really gives this a dynamic feel (as opposed to a static feeling from a straight on shot). Great detail too. Well done!

Excellent shot of the College with the statue in front. The DOF and pre-focusing (I guess) has provided excellent depth with both parts of the image well in focus. Also some more blue sky!!! Well done

Hi Douglas,
I've recently been to Ireland and I wish I had shot the same pictures as you. I like your idea here. The framing is neat and the POV well chosen. I just wish the statue could stand out a little more. It kinds of blends in with the background. Well done anyway!
