Photographer’s Note

Taken once again at the English Heritage festival at Kelmarsh in Northamptonshire, It shows a “Royalist foot soldier” from the English Civil War (1642 and 1651.).

I asked this guy if I could take a shot of him .. he stopped and looked straight into the lens and never uttered a single word. I was drawn to his eyes that seemed to look straight through me and his stare was reminiscent of the “Clint Eastwood” look in many of his spaghetti westerns. After the shutter went off he turned and walked away, sometimes I wonder if these re-enactors once dressed up take on the persona of the people they are portraying.

Good colour and exposure and crop excellent for composition. The blurred BG is important and the subjects really stands out well. I was going to post my version tonight. That's the second time you've done that! I'll go for the medieval period instead.

Funny story about the noncommunicative guy. The gun is so long it can't have been easy to frame it and I notice you have chopped a bit off the right - not too detrimental though. Good use of a wide aperture for the shallow DOF.

Great shot with the soldier nicely focused and the background more blurry! The photo has great contrast, is well balanced light, has beautiful colours and wonderful details! Great work, Michael!

Very nice image and well presented. Always good to see these re enactment photographs and this one I am sure would look excellant in black and white too
