In tempo di guerra, le vecchie cinte murarie della città costituivano un rifugio per le popolazioni dei dintorni. Ma durante il periodo d'insicurezza che ha inizio con la dissoluzione dell'Impero carolingio, il bisogno di protezione, rese necessaria ovunque la costruzione di nuovi ripari. In quell'epoca l'Europa occidentale si coprì di numerose rocche, costruite dai principi feudali perché servissero da rifugio ai loro sudditi. Tali rocche, o borghi, sorgevano di solito sopra un bastione di terra o di pietra circondato da un fossato; nel bastione si aprivano alcune porte. I contadini dei dintorni venivano mobilitati per la costruzione e la conservazione della Rocca. All'interno aveva residenza una guarnigione permanente di cavalieri. In un torrione elevato c'era l'abitazione del Signore del luogo; una canonica provvedeva ai bisogni del culto; infine, entro le mura sorgevano magazzini e granai. In tal modo i borghi laici, non diversamente dalle città ecclesiastiche, vivevano anch'essi soltanto dei frutti della terra ed erano privi di qualsiasi attività economica autonoma. Borghi e città erano in stretta relazione con la civiltà rurale, e si può ben dire, che lungi dal contrastarne le strutture, provvedevano a difenderla.

This is a very nice view of this great castle. The white stones of the castle form nice contrast with the green of the foliage and the blue sky.
The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail.

Bel punto di vista e buona luce. Anche i colori vanno bene, nonostante la difficoltà di tutto quel verde in primo piano. Divertente la nuvoletta proprio in cima alla torre...sembra la piuma del cappello di D'Artagnan;))))

The bottom up angle makes the structures of this castle even more impressive, but compresses a bit their height as it seems. We can see that with time the owners needed less defense power and more light inside, so they added windows.
