During the Portuguese Civil War, better known as the Liberal Wars, from 1828 to 1834 (see my previous note and photo), emperor Dom Pedro I of Brazil abdicated in favor of his son, who became emperor Dom Pedro II, and returned to Portugal as king Dom Pedro IV. He went first to the Azores, which were in the hands of the liberal partisans. Then, with the help of English and Spanish liberals, Pedro's military expedition landed on July 8, 1832, on the beaches between Pampelido and Mindelo (this photo) and attacked Miguel's army in Porto. Pedro's men became famous as the Braves of Mindelo.
Mindelo got the fame, but the real landing was in fact on the beach now called Memória, where there is now a monument (click for photo of Rui (rui_seabra)).
This last war in Portugal would end two years later with Miguel's capitulation in the Convention of Evoramonte.
Don't confuse this town of Mindelo, Northern Portugal, with the city of Mindelo, Cape Verde, which story I'll tell you in my next post.

Dear Francisco, I like this feeling of freedom in your picture - and great colours! I would probably change a composition a little bit - maybe cut the sand part to make the picture more horizontal and to move emphasis to the sea, but this is just my point of view!

Olá Francisco,
Fascinante a forma como tu vais encadeando as fotos umas nas outras. Quem diria que conseguias ligar esta praia ao pé do Porto com Évora-monte?
Quando a vi julguei que ias explicar a relação entre este Mindelo e o de Cabo Verde.
A foto até que está bem interessante em termos de compo e cores, embora a nitidez não seja o seu forte. Gosto daquela vastidão de areia salpicada pelos chapeuzitos de sol, do triâgulo a apontar para o mar e das rochas a quebrarem alguma monotonia geométrica e de cores.

Suas notas estão como ótimas aulas de história! A foto ficou bem bonita com um contraste forte entre areia e céu, e bem solitária também.

Hi Francisco,
Relaxing beach scene, Although I guess it was very hot there under August midday sun.
Rather static feeling on this one. I think it could be better if you used tele here. Framing a diamond shaped composition of people, umbrella, tent and whatever that is closest to camera.

És professor de historia :)? ,não sabia que havia uma praia com este nome na zona do Porto , muito interessante a praia com aquelas rochas , gostei dos tons de azul , a agua mesmo de verão não deve ser muito quente :), os chapeus de sol espalhados pela praia ficaram legais, parabens!!!

Que praia tão vazia, em pleno Agosto. Só podia ser no Norte de Portugal, pois quase parece Inverno. Gosto do V invertido da composição. Bonita.
