End of an Indian Summer Day Photo

Photographer’s Note

Chaque automne, je prends congé pour je vais sur la "montagne" au coeur de ma ville. Utiliser le mot "montagne" est sûrement exagéré, mais comme le reste de la ville est plutôt plat... Les Montréalais sont fiers de leur Mont-Royal! Et j'adore aussi cet endroit.

Ce jour-là, c'était comme un jour d'été. Tout le monde, en vêtements légers, appréciaient les chauds rayons du soleil. Et moi aussi. Après tout, le long hiver s'en vient et nous étions en plein dans ce fameux été indien... Le moment parfait pour la paresse...

À la fin du jour, alors que je m'apprêtais à partir, j'ai soudainement vu de nombreuses personnes assises sur une pente, en face du lac (Lac des castors). Pour quelle raison? Le coucher de soleil!!!

Voici donc ma photo d'un coucher de soleil. Une galerie sans photo de coucher de soleil n'est pas digne de ce nom, n'est-ce pas?

Ayez un beau mois de ... novembre! :))

Bonjour Claire! J'aime toujours voir une nouvelle photo de toi. Je connais tres bien cet endroit mais a premiere vue (sans la note) je n'aurais jamais devine. Pourquoi? Tu as capturer un moment tres special dans laquelle la lumiere transforme l'environement. Tres magique les silhouettes et les tonalites dorees. Il y a une tranquilite qui emane de l'attitude des personnes qui observent le couche du soleil. Une bonne photo pour celebrer la fin des jours d'ete!

Nobody can escape from a sunset photo. Even George (polonaise) uploaded once .
Actually what it counts at the end, is the result and the result here is not just a sunset photo. Here we have a wonderful photo from some happenings during a sunset. Here is a picture from a coexistence of humans, animals and plants under a wonderful moment of a sunset. And this is exactly the different. Is the different of how and why someone makes a sunset photo.
Anyway. I like very much your picture. I like the nice feelings that it gives to me. Thank you Claire for that.

Wow, there are so many things to like about this! The monochromatic treatment allows us to concentrate on the figures and the shapes alone, with no distractions. I like the sense of balance in this too, as the light and dark areas are in harmony. There is also some tension created by the people at the lower left and the upper right, being in opposite corners, so our eyes dart back and for between the two groups and try to connect them. Superb!

As the more experienced've said before me it's a fantastic (sunset)photo. Maybe the sunset wasn't very special itself, but you captured The Moment of it. Excellent composition and shadows. I like the most the person standing alone and the light around her/him.

This is not exactly a sunset photo Claire.It is more than this...
First without a sun,second with a color so close to sepia tone(I love this) and then the people.Their different reaction to a sunset.Seems a magical time for them.Just stopped at the "right" point in your frame and enjoy or wait...

C'est une réalisation extraordinaire.
Ce n'est peut-être pas la peine d'insister dans la note sur l'aspect "sunset"...parce que c'est tout simplement beau ici.
Généralement méprisé ou adoré, le sujet n'est ni plus ni moins bon qu'un autre.
Tout dépend de son traitement...Je pense que tout coucher du soleil mettant en scène les humains peut-être magnifique comme c'est le cas ici.

Tout d'abord, l'or et le noir....j'adore les photos composées de ces deux teintes-là.
Ensuite, la composition parfaite...telle un tableau...Les gens parfaitement bien positionnés, sur deux niveaux...en bas, les filles prenant des photos, reposent sur ta frame noire comme l'autre groupe de personnes repose sur le rocher noir...C'est tout simplement parfait.

J'aime beaucoup.

Vitesse d'obturation (1/2000) appropriée pour obtenir ce genre de résultat. Une excellente gérance de la lumière évitant la surexposition et créant par le fait même un effet de silhouette par la sous-exposition. Compo et netteté sont au rendez-vous.

Et voilà, le boulot est terminé.
Voilà qui change de ton ordinaire, et pourquoi pas, une fois de temps en temps.
Oui, nous avons été gâté par dame nature, cet année, on dirait qu'elle s'est repris pour un été moyen.
Je trouve ta photo très bien balancée, avec des sujets dans les deux coins opposés, créant ainsi 2 zones d'intérets avec un point d'union que sont les deux oiseaux qui volent devant le spectacle que le lac réflète.
C'est doux et reposant, un moment magique qu'il ne fallait pas manqué.

Comme je peux voir tu t'es laissé avoir à photographier un couché de soleil! Ah the temptation ou "You have crossed to the dark side" hahah, bon ca va faire les conneries. Il y a quelque chose de bien complexe dans l'image que tu nous proposes. Les tons de dorés texturés qui se retrouvent dans la composition contrastent d'une manière particulière les silouettes des personnes au premier plan. Je dis contrast car à mes yeux, ils sont tellement parfaits qu'il semblent quasiment ajouté en photoshop... Je viens de découvrir ton secret?

Comme d'autre perosnnes mentionnent la véritable force de ton image est le fait que tu réussis à prendre un point de vue que plusieurs voire des centaines de gens ont déjà photographié et le rendre unique voir 'claire de lunien'... :)

un petit coucou amical. je viens de passer sur la derniere image de Charles et je suis tombé sur ton superbe commentaire à son égard. j'en suis resta baba !!
je me suis plu sur tes dernieres images en noir et blanc mais j'ai retenu malgré tout cette derniere pour l'equilibre et la douceur de sa composition. quelle gestion, en plus tu parles aux oiseaux !!!
cette legere dominante dorée est vraiment tres plaisante. Je surveille souvent la lune, mais ces derniers temps elle se fait capricieuse et je n'ai pas su la capteuriser (je ne sais pas si ça se dit chez vous, mais chez nous: non !!!) mais je ne desespere pas ...

Hi Claire--I was sure I had commented on this photo, but apparently all I did was think about what I was going to write, rather than actually doing it! That's middle age, I guess. Anyway, it's those birds, those free birds--they are what make this so pleasant. They seem to be in the same mellow, unhurried mood as the earthbound people who soak up the last of the warm sun. The shoreline on the right is like a giant finger pointing into the frame, calling our attention to those birds, as if there were risk we wouldn't notice them.

The people on the left are a little too much crowded down into the corner--it would have been ideal if they had each taken two steps to the right. I recognize, though, that it was not practical for you to shout down from the mountaintop, "Hey you two! Yeah you, the silhouettes! Two steps to the right please!" So you probably have the best available framing. (Although, people are conditioned to obey voices from mountaintops, so it might have worked...)

Two girls watching the sunset, two seagulls(? - problably pigeons but I like more the others) flying under the sunset and an ovni floating in the air with some aliens on it, surprised with the beauty of the sunset on earth - what a story! Decisive moment? For sure. Look at where you placed those birds! It's problably freezing (light clothing? hard to believe!), but I agree that this image trasmites the warm temperatures you refer in the note. You don't post much, but each one is quite special, Claire.

Well, I'm a little late in getting to this one, but it was worth while. It seems sepia, but then it could be the natural colouring at this time of day, with a bit of contrast added. But the composition is what is so good, with the two groups of silhouetted figures and the birds caught in flight between them. The light glinting on the water means there is no need of the sun in your 'sunset' photo. The mood really is the mellow one that the end of the day can bring during the last moments of light.

Well...when did you sneak this photo past me...
I know, that's a stupid question given that the date is right inder the shot...anyhow, I failed to see this Claire shot and I'm less a man for it. If it's not a document of how to take a silhouette shot, I don't know what is...How did you get that awesome gold tone? The best part of the photo for me is the two gulls flying above mirrored by the two people strolling the beach to the left...an excellent metaphor. That said, looking at each individual body, and the particular language contained therein makes this shot all about human stories. Without even seeing faces we see lives playing out infront of us.

Maybe my favorite part is the person standing on the slight point into the lake...so stoic and proud...great.

Essential elements in this photo are...

The people in the upper right side in contrast with the two on the lower left. This is what brings this together nicely.

The excellent lighting and monochrome effect is superb.

The gulls flying freely while the people along the shore enjoy the closing moments of the day.

Very well done Claire. I am sure with IS you could have taken this at a much slower shutter speed, perhaps at f8 and 1/500th of a second for greater depth of focus. But there is no need for any higher f stop because it all came together nicely here for you.

PS.. on a final note I see George certainly has some wild comments to share. He is quite the character!!

A beautifully atmospheric composition, Claire. I wouldn't call this a sunset - even if that is what they are watching - but the setting sun has created a wonderful opportunity for you to create this silhouette masterpiece. The capture of the two birds in flight - in a perfect position - is icing on the cake. With global wamring I guess you may be experiencing a lot more Indian summers in Montreal - let's hope they bring many more good photo ops for you too. Cheers . . . David

Hello Claire,

Magical composition and lighting here in this tranquil Canadian lakeside. I have tried photos like this but they have not turned out so perfectly. It just takes practice. The proliferation of reeds, ripples and birds all help to break up the surface of the peaceful lake in a randomly natural way. The black edged frame is good too as it helps to compliment the contrasts. Those silhouettes of the gathering people are the main attention grabber and remain an enduring sight. This is a triple S: a superb sunset shot! What I like most is that by crop, pov and positioning of the silhouettes, there's an intriguing lack of depth, which makes the scene almost two-dimensional. My favourite part is the silhouette with the satchel (?) standing near the tip of the C-shape.

Chef d'oeuvre au Mont Royal, ton commentaire me permet largement de mieux apprecier ta photo et d'en comprendre le contexte, quand a la composition, une nouvelle fois, pour moi, rien a dire, on a bien 3 plans distincts, chacun contraste differemment et les ombres parfaitement dessinees...
