[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Danilo Martinez (cunejo200), one of my favs here on TE has awarded me the 'franchise' (...:-0) to post my share of the indigenous philippine badjaos. thanks, Dan i needed that! here, a sequel to Danilo's series of badjaos' postings.

the badjao (ethnonyms are: badjau, bajao, bajaw, sama dilaut, sea gypsies) inhabits Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. during the early days, badjaos used to be "residents" of the southwestern philippine seas only but they now can be seen in most southern Tagalog regions and the Visayas (infact, metro manila included). being peace-loving people, i am sure one of the reasons why they leave the south is to get away from the insurgency 'activities' and the very high incidence of open piracy plaguing the area. the badjaos claimed never to have wielded weapons- preferring to simply flee from potential attack. they have been nomadic, seafaring people for most of their history. many badjaos still practice that same lifestyle to this day which explains why they are still commonly called "sea gypsies".

the badjaos, like any distinct group, have lost some of their heritage as some of their stories were never re-told to the next generation. they also are beginning to lose something of their identity as they integrate with their adopted, land-based communities.

i had the opportunity to mingle with badjaos as two of my college classmates were badjaos themselves, and their names i still recall- Jaling and Razad.

this foto was taken minutes before disembarking from a ferry that took me from Zamboanga City to Lamitan, my birthplace.

Hi benedict
I like your picture for the color, the light, the nice aerial POV and for the beautifull scene.
I am not sure that the horizontal frame was the best choise.
I try a WS. I don't know what you think about
Have a nice day
Bertrand

Hello Benedict,
Great pov here! The colors and sharpness are very nice, i also like the people expression looking at the camera with smiling faces.
Unusual composition but works fine, once again the good pov choice, Congratulations.
Regards, Daniel

Hello Benedict,
Congratulations for your photo full of beauty. The note is very good.

Hi Benedict,

Perfect compo,I like the glance of the smiley people...
Stay well

Deniz

Hi Ben,

very unusual and interesting pov. I like the saturation you provided and the hapiness of those people. I can see they are very friendly. Interesting note as well. Good work!
Saludos,
Carlos

A great picture, original and even intriguing 'postproduction', plus an interesting note. This is what learning about the world through photography (and the other way around) is all about! Great work!
Benny

Hi Benedict,
G R E A T !!!!!

Hello Benedict,
Brilliant angle to capture this perspective of this boat. Nice daily life with happy faces.
Regards,
Jusni

Hi Benedict,
Very nice photo to learn about the world, and its people. The saturation and POV are good.
However, despite being unusual, the landscape format doesn't let me appreciate in full this photo and the people. I had to turn my head. As an artistic expression is fine, but as a journalist/informative photo it doesn't work. I assume, by your excellent note, that you wanted to show this people to the rest of us. A portrait format could have been the best option, IMHO.
Good work, excellent informative photo
TFS
Jorge

Hi Benedict,

First of all, a happy new year to you!
Very nice color and composition - it's like three different portraits, framed by the crossbars. Though I had to look at the vertical photo to fully appreciate it - the perspective on the horizontal one looked weird. Guess I'm not a gymnast :-)

Best regards,
Lamberto

Bonne journée.

Hi Benedict,
Interesting framing, I like this composition that the boat seems to be hanging in something. Smiles from the boat are also so nice.
Best wishes, Hisashi

Hi Ben,
I do not know th guy, but he ceratainly has the right attitude, with him sitting and the woman rowing. LOL. The pov and the composition, the sharpness and colors are exceptionalş my friend. Best regards. Salvator.

Olá Benedict, the POV is great, the colors wonderful and the situation is funny, with everyone looking at you. I understand your original ideia of presenting an horizontal version but I'm not sure if it works. Even graphically this is quite interesting, although I would crop a bit on top.
Ricardo

Hi Benedict,

great idea this vertical POV, it's really surprising! nice expressions and beautiful colors!

Hi Benedict,
Maybe it was your intention was making the observer confused about the POV/orientation, but while the their joyous smiling expressions, the geometric effect of the boat and the amazing colour and clarity of the water stood up as soon as I opened it, the next thing I though was rotating it. I prefer it rotated!...
It's a very pleasant and punchy image, whose only minor flaws is the OE on the brighter areas, which look very hard to avoid and aren't too disturbing anyway.
Regards, José.

beautiful smiles on their faces... and beautiful light too... very good shot benny, but i would have prefered to see it upwards...

take care pal...

korkut;)

Hello Ben,
Ang ganda, Bai. Very good color saturation and contrast. Wonderfully captured and presented ... interesting to see the smiles amidst poverty and hardship ... you've captured the real Filipino spirit here. I first saw Cunejo2000's photo in MIP and it is awesome. I kinda agree with some of the comments regarding the orientation of the image. But overall it is a very good photo.... I like the borders. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Hay Hijo,
Salamat naman for the promotional plug. A very good depiction of the Badjaos. I see that a few have commented on the orientation of the image. You and I are alike that we prefer a landscape format. I'd like to go back to Basilan and Zamboanga next time. Greetings! Danilo

Hi Benedict

Very eye catching shot from a high pov and great composition. You have captured the graphic effect very well. Nice smiles and relaxed mood.

WEll done. TFS

Hi!
Clear fine shot with a good and very original composition.
Fine colors and light too.
I think I would prefer a portrait format here, I had to turn my head to see the faces! :-)

Love the colors and POV, good work on this one!

hi Ben!
Courageous move pre for posting this portrait shot to landscape. The lines of the banka made this composition work for you.
Colour saturation is good and image is crisp and I simply love the water ripples.

Hi Benedict,
phenomenal frame, is very attractive and different. Image with much force and an enormous quality of the image, is brilliant. The colors are wonderful giving an enormous contrast to the scene. The movement of waters prints a strong dynamism to the image. Elegant presentation and composition of the photography.

Salut, Jordi

Hello benedict,
I really like how you've presented the subject, using horizontal axis. It obliges us to look at it more carefully. I also like the colours. A very pleasant composition.
Best regards
JMarc

Good POV. Like always,U R always around the water.U freaken fish!

i like your point of view here. were you on a big boat when you took this?

Hello Ben,
I see you have alot of beautiful pictures on your galeries and i like this shot alot, interesting story of the Badjaos and its amazing that they really reminded me of the same communities in my come from South Sumatra near Batanghari river, they call with same name 'Suku Bajau' who are living in the river/sea. Back to your picture, i think maybe it easy for us to see it on vertical view and just suggest to inclusion whole the boat. Nevertheless your picture and the story has shown the interesting 'sea gypsies' from Philippine. Thanks :-)

Hi Benedict,

the look into your marvelous gallery was immediately drawn to this excellent capture. I love the POV which creates this most beautiful composition of hypnotical blue water and shining smiley faces. It is so beautiful not only in its graphic effect of chosen moive but also because of this spontaneous and happy expresions. Beautiful!

Kind regards,
Jeri

In Sabah, we called them Bajau Laut or Sea Bajau. You will find them in the south eastern seaboard of Sabah especially from the water edges of Semporna to Tawau.

We have a photography project which is a little bit of documenting their livelihood and community services. You can see some of my works of the Sea Bajau in my gallery.

Your composition here is graphical, an aerial impression or an overview of the Sea Bajau. I would say, a signature composition of the maritime nomad and how they closely related to the sea. heck, they pretty much lived on a boat or at least by the sea, all their lives.

Regards
Rabani
