Photographer’s Note
The longest and oldest canal in the world. The Grand Canal in China is still very much used for transportation of bulky goods. The low lying barges were fascinating to watch, families live this hard life aboard their barges. Very often there were women stood on the front of the barges with a flag indicating which way to go.

Hello Jean,
I think that these shots of barges on the Grand Canal have been the most successful of your Chinese shots so far.
Very clear and sharp, considering it was taken near the 300mm end of your lens at 1/150 sec.
The experts say use 1/300 at 300mm [and so on in proportion] to avoid camera shake - though it's not always easy to remember when a photo opportunity occurs.
You can feel the dynamism of these great blunt barges pushing the water in front of them.
A great composition with the red flags giving a lovely splash of colour amongst the grey.
Regards,
Peter.

Hello Jean
I'm glad to see another of these excellent canal shots. This one repeats the feeling of activity, the character of these bulky barges, and a total escape from the 'picturesque' Well cropped and composed to give good positions to the red flags and, with the slight overlapping of the barges, creating one interesting shape to give real weight to the main interest.
Bravo!
Best wishes Maggie

Hi Jean, I have only now realised that I have posted the same barge, I love the depth in your photo though &, it shows just how busy the canal was, the contract it light between the clear foreground & the misty background brings back some memories, a wonderful image &, TFS, kind regards Wilson.
