Photographer’s Note

Santiago de Cuba is one of the friendliest big cities I have ever been. One gets soon familiarized with the place and the way of living of its people. No threatens, no harassments, everything seems so natural and sympathetic. Children played innocently on the streets still not contaminated with computers or video games… During the night, the pale street lights compose fantastic lines and forms with the shadows, like if there was a second reality. And what I enjoyed the most is how naturally people would accept my presence, not being incommodated at all by my camera, keeping playing, performing their activities like if I was not there… Is that not the best proof of their genuine nature, their lack of fear to the foreigners, to their curiosity, to their introspective look into their worlds?... A beautiful place.

on voit bien que les enfants ne posent pas.. Alors que d'habitude ils sont contents et tout sourire devant l'objectif.. Là on dirait qu'ils ne t'on même pas vu..

Great scene. Great mood. Ghostly a bit - makes one wonder of the future of these boys. The tones of your Cuban photos are exceptional. And there is a great load of feelings towards the people you are showing us. Exceptional series.

Pues a mi me produce una sensación inquietante las figuras de esos niños sin rostro y congelados con movimientos robóticos (o quizás de zombies).
De nuevo un buen trabajo con la luz y una imagen sugerente y que no deja indiferente.

Salut André,
j'aime beaucoup la façon avec laquelle tu décris Santiago de Cuba. Clairement, tu y a passé du temps de qualité et tes photos montrent bien le bien-être que tu y as trouvé.
Ta photo, malgré le flou un peu partout dans la photo, c'est clairement une des meilleures photos que j'Aie vu cette année. Techniquement, elle n'est pas parfaite, tu le sais sûrement, mais elle nous soutire des sentiments spéciaux. Au premier coup d'oeil, les formes des corps des enfants, les ombres et la lumière faible rend la scène un peu lugubre. Puis c'est le jeu, l'amitié entre les jeunes, etc...Les tons de couleurs sont hallucinants. C'est vraiment bien vu et je suis jaloux.
Puisque tu as décidé de montrer cette photo, tu t'exposes aux critiques, voici la mienne. Le flou est un peu dérangeant, mais je comprend que tu as fait vite, tu avais la caméra à la main, tu as ouvert le diaphragme au max et advienne que pourra...c'est la bonne chose à faire je crois. Une autre chose, tu avais un grand angle sous la main, il aurait été facile de reculer d'un pas et de prendre l'ombre de celui qui fait une acrobatie au complet et de prendre celui assis à gauche...Juste un avis.

I can only agree with al the enthousiastoc previous critics.
The three things i love the most in that picture:
- wide angle
- the fantomatic silhouettes of the children. You did very very well with this night back-light, although i can imagine you didn't have much time to shoot.
- the color of the scene, with this pale orange tones, almost sepia.

quite fantastic light and composition that you captured here. An image that could be used easily for illustration of a book of any kind. YOur PP treatment to a brownish monochromatism is very attractive and the real reason that draw my attention even as a thumbnail. I like the high contrast between the light exposed areas and the shadows.

Un superbe travail que je découvre ici. Une photo avec une ambiance folle, pas nécessaire de parler technique (que je ne maîtrise que peu) car cela a déjà été fait. Mais ce que je ressens à la regarder est très fort, comme un résumé de cette ville dont tu parles avec beaucoup de tendresse...quelle belle récompense pour cette écoute. Les formes des enfants, ces corps tous minces et souples, la lumière magnifique, les ombres, bref, bravo.

J'addores le jeux de la lumière et de l'ombre. toutes ta série sur Cuba est fantastique !
