Photographer’s Note
I appreciate the helpful critiques by all the TE friends who commented on my earlier posting of a similar view.
I put up this for comparison with my first posting.
Taken at almost the same time, this shot seems to have addressed some of the earlier critiques. The bright spot light to the right is completely avoided, part of South Bank included and the pedestrian bridge spaning across Yarra River is shown entirely. At a focal length of 20mm, I feel this has less of an impact than the earlier shot.
You critiques and comments are welcome
Thanks
Regards
Alfred

A spectacular and clear shot- I am enjoying the night views of Melbourne from you and Matt. I like both this one and the earlier one you posted, the earlier one seems to have been taken at an earlier hour, I think I like the composition here better tho. Thanks

This is a very nice picture of Melbourne from the Victoria Bridge. The light on all the buildings is very well managed and the inclusion of the South Bank walkway is very good for the composition. In night photo, Flinders Street Station is usual the trouble place because of its strong light against the darker background. But in here, it is just perfect. The exposure time also contributed for a very nice surface of the Yarra River and excellent reflections. Very well done.

Hi Alfred, I saw this and had to go back and review it against your first shot. They are both very good, but you have included some suggestions from the first which have improved this one even more. This is an excellent shot of the Yarra south side. Your exposure is excellent. Your colour throughout and the sharp detail is excellent. I really do have to take a tripod to Melbourne with me next time. This becomes one of those shots that everyone remembers when they are in a similar situation and have the chance to do it again. Awesome.
Thanks, John

Hello, Alfred -
This is a great image. The composition is excellent -- the sharp, colorful lights on top with the dream-like colorful reflection in the river, the multi-toned sky. Nice POV looking down the river along the buildings. Everything is sharp and clear, especially for a night shot.

hi Alfred
I am not disappointed for your disappearance in Jan to bring this superb shot and I believe it is fantastically done to show many sharp details of night exposure for city skyline.

Both of your Melbourne shots are very good - the best possible timing (soon after sunset), well managed exposure, correct focus, little noise.
Comparing to the other photo, this one has much better, more saturated colors. Sky here is really blue, unlike the previous photo where it's almost gray. It's better composed here - more of the river visible as well as other bank of the river.
However, I think it still can be improved. I would crop few pixels from the left to remove two flagpoles. Also there is no need to have that much sky here, because above the Rialto Towers sky looks quite dark and without much details (like clouds). It would probably make sense to crop some of it from the top.
Another problem visible in both photos - noise coming from over-compressed JPG. It's visible in the sky around some buildings. This photo is 155 kb in size, you previous photo only 108 KB. TE limits size to 200 KB. So you can easily upload less compressed photo.

Hi Alfred
Another attractive view of my city. I like the contrast between the sharpness of the promenade in front of Southgate and the smoothness of the colourful Yarra. The details of the buildings are excellent. The sky is a bit noisy but is it because of the resizing ?

Yes Fred, I found this more appealing. This had better leads, taking the viewer from right to left; from the bright light to the silhouette of the city at left. Focused and composed.

Hi Alfred,
thanks for commenting on my image, as I now have seen your gallery and boy you have talent for night shots which are very difficult to get right. The colours, especially the blues are very fluorescent like. Highlight detail is holding well and same goes for the shadows.
Very good image, keep up the good work
