Photographer's Note

I was walking through Fairfax looking for photo opportunities for this series when I noticed a crew cutting down a huge tree at the back edge of the sidewalk next to a restaurant. A man walked up as I took photographs and asked if I was with the newpaper. Imagine that! I said no, just an amateur having some fun.

The man owned the building next door and the tree belonged to him. He told me of his attempts to convince the City of Fairfax not to cut the tree down, offering to build a bridge over the sidewalk that had been broken by the tree's roots. But the City said absolutely, the tree had to go.

I'm always sad to see a mature tree taken down, especially in an urban area where they provide both shade and a break in the concrete and asphalt. But here it was happening and the opportunity for a few shots was just too tempting. This man was casually stepping from one tree limb to the next as he weilded his chainsaw and lopped the limbs off, one after another. I can almost hear the buzzzz of the chainsaw...
