About Saint (Sadhu) : "In Hinduism, sadhu is a common term for an ascetic or practitioner of yoga (yogi) who has given up pursuit of the first three Hindu goals of life: kama (enjoyment), artha (practical objectives) and even dharma (duty). The sadhu is solely dedicated to achieving moksha (liberation) through meditation and contemplation of God. Although the term Sadhu has its roots in Hinduism it is also used for followers of other religions, if they live a Sadhu life.

Varanasi is generally believed to be 3,000 years,old. According to legend, it is 5,000 years old.

Varanasi is a holy city in Hinduism, being one of the most sacred pilgrimage places for Hindus of all denominations. More than 1,000,000 pilgrims visit the city each year. It has the holy shrine of Lord Kashi Vishwanath (a manifestation of Lord Shiva), and also one of the twelve revered Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. According to mythology, Lord Shiva once in fact lived in Kashi (Varanasi).

Varanasi (Sanskrit: वाराणसी Vārāṇasī,Telugu: వారణాసి pronunciation [ʋaːɾaːɳəsiː] (help·info)), also commonly known as Benares and Kashi, is a city situated on the banks of the river Ganga (Ganges) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh regarded holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains, and is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.

Varanasi has nearly 100 ghats. People often refer to Varanasi as "the city of temples," "the holy city of India," "the religious capital of India," "the city of lights," "the city of learning," and the "culture capital of India"

Hello Rajiv,

A fabulous portrait of the ascetic, deep in thought. The resplendent colors and sharp resolution make it an effective portrait, but beyond that, you have placed one eye of the subject along the vertical centerline of the frame. It was discovered in 1998 by the British born American psychologist Christopher Tyler that in all ALL portraits by the great western artists — from Leonardo to Raphael, Rembrandt to Vermeer, from van Gogh to Picasso — the centerline goes through (or very close to one eye). It can be the right or the left eye, and it can be the leading or the trailing eye. This is a lesson for all of us doing art or photography. In my book 'Math and the Mona Lisa' I wrote about the phenomenon in one chapter at length. Whereas most gifted painters (and photographers) practice this intuitively, Leonardo may have done it consciously.

In any event, great portrait!

A fine portrait of the Sadhu with great sharpness allowing to see clearly the details. You've handled well the light, and the colors are well rendered. His bamboo stick match well with his bright orange clothes. I like the framing too!

belle photo de cet homme qui a l' air d' etre un sage.Jolies couleurs et il faut dire que dans ce pays on sait agencer les couleurs, même le bâton est de la même couleur.
Bon portrait de ce visage superbe et marqué, de cette barbe d' homme sage.
Belle prise qui fait ressortir les traits plissé de cet homme qui réfléchit.

The bright orange in this shot caught my eye in your gallery. A great portrait showing all the wonderful details of the features of his face and beard. Nice tight composition and I like that you have included his staff as well.
