This is a view of the great monastery/castle Corvey on Weser river not far away from the small town Höxter. It is a place full of history indeed ...

Corvey was an acient Benedictine Abbey and it was one of the most famous Carolingian monasteries. It had a most important library and many bishops came from here. Perhaps its most worth mentioning merit is the Christianization of Scandinavia which was effected from here. Ansgar (801 - 865), the "Apostle of the north" was educated in Corvey.

Louis the Pious founded it at the instigation of his father, Charlemagne. The monastery first was built in Hethis, not far away from the today's place in the year 815. Already in 822 the monastery relocated to its today's place. the first monks came from Corbie Abbey in Picardie/France and they called it "new Corbie" - later on Corvey. You can read more about this impressive place here. In the 30 Years War the monastery was destroyed - and with it one of the most important libraries of the then world - but it was built up again in its today shape. In 1792 the pope closed the monastery and disposed its district to a diocese - with only 10 parishs. Already in 1803 the prince-bishopric Corvey was terminated in the context of secularization and its territory devolved to the counts of Nassau-Dietz. Corvey Abbey now became a castle.

The steeples you can see at the right in my photo, the west end of the ancient Carolingian abbey church with three naves (built from 830 to 844) today is the oldest still existing German building (with the exception of Roman buildings). Unfortunately there was a scaffold at its facade when I visited it, but you can see it better here (please look large version there).

Hello frank
interesting composition. I would be curious to see what it could give taking several pictures and stitch them together instead of one with wide angle.
Anyway, pleasant to look at and instructive note.
best regards
JMarc

Hello Frank,
A splendid perspective along the facade of this beautiful building. Good point of view with the road acting as a lead-line and help to take the eye away from the car on the left. Colours and clarity are very good indeed.

Hallo Frank!

So this one at the right is a true German Antiquity, eh? Quite impressive church, and also quite impressive that it was built 1200 years ago. Contrast between it and this Baroc buildings is interesting, too.

Hallo lieber Frank,

Cordialement, alain

This is a good presentation of this beautiful and historic building, Frank. The long, flat composition seems to suite this ssubject. I wonder if it is still in monastic use. Regards kevin
